We fall just behind WVU at 57. Unbelievable.

  • Don't mean anything is right. But it is nice for us starved football fans in may to have something good to read and talk about.

I wish that was the case...but the preseason rankings DO mean a lot in the beauty contest that the CFB season really is. How far up a team ascends in the various polls is correlated to where that team begins before the season.

  • First of all, this is not a pre-season poll.  It is a Power Index calculation used to determine strengths and weaknesses of all Division I teams and to rate them accordingly.

Polls, usually conducted by the Coaches, AP, and others will be released closer to the start of the football season.  Those are beauty contests and have been used as part of the old BCS system.  We live in different times now.

The four teams selected to play for the national championship will be selected by a committee that will use data like this Power Index to make their choices for the field.  Similarly, the selection committee will also use data to determine the best of the Group of 5 from the mid-major conferences for their one entry into an Access Bowl.

College football fans are going to have to get used to the idea that college football "polls" as we once knew them, will not be as relevant as they were in days gone by.  We are in a new paradigm for the sport and only time will tell how well the system will work.

Quite frankly, I can see a scenario where an undefeated mid-major team gets ranked in the Top 25 in both major college football "polls" but is passed over for another Group of 5 team with 2 or 3 losses but deemed to be more worthy because of strength of schedule.

This is not a national conspiracy against Marshall, but it certainly will take a while to figure out exactly what teams are expected to do to earn a bid to an Access Bowl.  Trust me, there will be a lot of complaining at the end of the season...just like the talk you hear following the NCAA Basketball Selection Committee when they announce their field.  Someone always feels left out or overlooked.

It might be bad luck for us again. The BCS system was brand new back in '99 also.

  • This has little to do with how good teams are, and more to do with how good teams are for Disney's bottom line.

Marshall is on the wrong side of Disney's balance sheet.

  • Will they not base the highest ranking on the polls though for the g5 champion's access bowl?

Nevertheless, it will be nice to be a top 25 team. Nothing like seeing that # before the name on TV

  • Get used to it.  We will get hammered all season on our schedule with no mention that Louisville should have been on it and asked to be moved.  When the national media can smack around a program on our level when we do good...they will do it.

Herd fans just need a thick skin the next 6-7 months and then again during draft/combine time as they rip up Cato and find his flaws.

  • I might suggest that we are overly sensitive.  Ball State didn't get hammered over their SOS when they made their run despite the fact that Kentucky was the best team they played. All you can say is," We played who was on the schedule. If the ACC wants us to join we'll be more than happy to talk."  Unlike the folks up north, we're not dodging anybody.

  • And we might get our chance to say I told you so in Dallas......even if we're not undefeated. Win the league and the rest might fall right into our lap.

No to your question 24.  The same Selection Committee which choses the four-team national championship games will select the team from the remaining Group of 5 to play in one of the major Access Bowls.  Polls, as you know them, will still exist, be great fodder for water cooler conversations and talk radio, and heavily promoted by ESPN and USA Today but will be irrelevant in terms of being selected to play in the Access Bowl unless you believe members of the committee could be swayed by polls generated by sportswriters and coaches (more like SIDs).

Polls will remain what they've always been, beauty contests, except now they've been taken out of the equation for the National Championship playoff and Access Bowl invitation to a G of 5.

Very true. If all things go perfectly, where we are ranked in Mmay, will have a direct impact on where we are ranked at the end, increasing our ceiling a bit. Can we make the top 10 again?

  • Our ranking would also depend on how others were doing. It'd be nice if the big boys were beating each other up too. Gonna be so hard to go undefeated though.

And that is exactly the same point I made. As a mid major in a crappy conference, if your team starts at say 60 & goes 11-1 you might end up at 19 or lower. If that same team achieves the same record and it started at 30 it would end up at 12 or so. In the Herd's situation, the ceiling IS largely determined by the initial position in the polls, particularly since the old 'you don't play anybody' argument is valid in the coming season's schedule. CFB has a lot in common with figure skating.
