    FBS teams: Marshall, West Virginia

    2013 combined record: 14-12

Just over 200 miles separates Marshall and West Virginia along Interstate 79, yet the schools have only met 12 times including the inaugural meeting in 1911. West Virginia has claimed all dozen games, including a record-setting 69-34 romp in 2012, yet it's Marshall whose program appears heading in the right direction.

The Thundering Herd played in the Conference USA title game last season, and behind underrated quarterback Rakeem Cato finished with 10 wins that included a victory over Maryland in the Military Bowl. West Virginia went 4-8 in 2013, ending the Mountaineers' streak of 11 straight bowl-bound seasons.

The schools do not have any future meetings scheduled.

  • The majority of the trip is on I-79, can't really fault them on the description.

That's a stretch of the imagination for sure.

Since they used combined records of teams and winning percentage, statistically, yes we would have.

  • Are you sure about that?  Iowa was ranked No.27 and the combined record for Iowa & Iowa State was 11-14.  I'm pretty sure they didn't use combined records of state football teams to rate the states in this opinion piece.  Anyway, it's a pretty senseless article and one that is not really worthy of discussion.  I should have just kept my opinion to myself.  Sorry.
