HUNTINGTON -- Marshall's Thundering Herd will be roaming across fresh fields in the fall.

AstroTurf, the originator of the synthetic turf industry, is installing playing surfaces at Joan C. Edwards Stadium and the nearly completed indoor athletic facility. AstroTurf was installed last summer on Hoops Family Field at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.

"We have been thrilled with our AstroTurf field's performance at Veterans," Marshall athletic director Mike Hamrick said in a news release from AstroTurf.com. "We anticipate an equally superb level of performance from the two new athletic fields.

"The technology and team behind AstroTurf give us every confidence that we made the right choice to go with them again for our synthetic turf needs."

AstroTurf's MT synthetic turf system will cover the fields. The product consists of tufted polyethylene fibers with sand and rubber infill. The individual Horseshoe-shaped monofilament blades give the MT turf system its natural appearance.

The football stadium surface replaces an older artificial turf field. The installation process involved re-grading of the stone base followed by resurfacing with the new AstroTurf system and should be completed in June, the news release said. The field will be ready for the 2014 season.

Installation of a full length, 120-yard football field at the indoor athletic facility is scheduled to begin in June The field will be outlined by a six-lane running track, seating for 1,000 spectators and amenities for baseball, golf and other sports.

"It's an exciting time here at Marshall," said Scott Morehouse, the Marshall associate athletic director of facilities. "Our athletic footprint on campus is growing with meaningful projects that will pay dividends for our student-athletes for years to come. The quality fields from AstroTurf are a big part of these improvements to our athletic infrastructure."

Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex went through an evaluation process to receive FIFA One-Star certification from soccer's international governing body. It is one of only 20 fields in the United States, and the second soccer-specific NCAA Division I facility, with that certification.

  • That sounds really good......

Now, how about finishing the work
On the tennis courts. They've been
    sitting unfinished, going towards a
    year.
Retired 10 years early to follow Herd sports.
Those 10 years have been marvelous.
