  • I thought he predicted Orange Bowl? It doesn't matter one of the "New Years Six" is one of the "New Years Six". The Peach would probably have the biggest Herd fan turnout.

  • Anybody got a linky for this or is it only in the print publication?

I was hoping to have a link as well. I wonder what is Phil's preseason ranking for us and how high are we going to be? We are starting to get a lot of preseason hype! I hope we can live up to the expectations.

  • Lately Phil has put out some loving for the Herd.  Predicted undefeated season, 17 players on all conference teams, #19 team ranking. Should stir up some green blooded fans.

Agree on the Peach Bowl having the biggest Herd turnout.  With a lot of our alumni in the Southern states, could see 15-20,000 Herd fans in attendance.

  • Maybe i am becoming a grumpy old man, but I get so tired of people asking for links. Go to google and type in Phil Steele 2014 Marshall 19, and if the first listing is the link you are looking for, post it on here for everyone else, and if the story you are looking for isn't one of the 1st 5 choices, then their probably isn't a link for it... Sorry to those I offend, I don't mean it to be offensive, and for being so blunt.  It isn't so much this topic, but it seems like on every single board, every single thing you type anymore, even if it is just an opinion, you have somebody wanting a link, and if their isn't a link it isn't true.  I got news for ya, everything you read on the interweb isn't true, and every opinion isn't backed up by a slinky:).

Agree. These kids have a lot of pressure to live up to these expectations. We'll have a big bullseye on our backs and we'll get everyone's best effort.

Certainly great stuff to get the fans pumped!

  • No $18M payout.  Can't remember where I got this (probably Wikipedia), but posted this elsewhere:

    Quote
Playoff participants will receive $6 million, while the other eight bowl squads will receive $4 million. There is no additional payment for advancing to the title game, and the payout formula to the leagues is nearly determined, executive director Bill Hancock told The Gazette this week.

Playoff meaning those 4 teams chosen to play off for the national championship game.  Peach bowl is not in that rotation this year.

Say we find ourselves in the Peach Bowl, what % of that $4 million are we looking at? I assume we will have to split that with CUSA?

  • Kinda hard to provide a link when it was only released on the Apple Store about 3 hours ago... and it's part of an app... not an article.  I guess those of us who purchased could do a screen cap and post, but that of course is in violation of copyright law and I'm sure no Herd Fan is asking a fellow Herd Fan to break the law... right???    :P

Link here if you would like to purchase - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/phil-steeles-magazine/id834963181?mt=8

Print copy won't be out for another 3 weeks.

  • I'm old school.  Let's everybody take a deep breath and stop smelling yourselves.  The potential is there, but it's one game at a time.  Let's just beat the crap out of Miami and start from there.  And as one who thought Chuck Martin would have been a great candidate here, I'm not going to underestimate anyone.

Yes, we split it, with the lions share going to the bowl participants in the league, then the rest to the other memebers. All bowl money is pooled this way and cusa covers bowl teams travel expenses out of the pool before it is divided up.

That being said, if these bowls operate like the bca bowls, the school must sell the tickets or the school eats the loss on those tickets. This is how wvu and uconn lost millions going to the bcs bowls. Hopefully that is different now but I am not sure if it changed with the new bowls or not.

Great pub for us going into the season.  Could easily be ranked before game 3 or 4 with convincing wins.

I cant find a link and we are not on his preseason ap 25, nor are we revealed in his top 40 countdown (it is at 24 so far, notables are cincy, florida, texas, louisville, all been posted already). We will see but I am doubting this info so far. I may buy the magazine and post it for everyone

  • Also, post on HN says orange bowl.... that is a contracted bowl when its not in the CFP semifinal rotation. Which means it is impossible for us to play in the orange bowl. As well as the sugar and rose, unless we make the 4 team playoff and one of those is hosting.

A g5 school can only play in the fiesta, cotton or peach/atlanta/chikfila bowl (its named different names everywhere, the official site is calling it the Atlanta bowl)

So I believe this is bogus info or is a gross oversight by steele, which I doubt. And philsteele.com does not have us in the preseasom top 25.

  • He has Marshall projected to be playing Auburn in the Orange Bowl. He says that in 2014 Marshall will have the 4th best offense in the entire country along with the 5th best defense. He is definitely high on the Herd.

  • McMurphy from ESPN has us projected to play Auburn in thr peach bowl. Are you sure he says oramge bowl sports?

Because again, it is not possible for us to play in the orange bowl when it isnt a playoff semi final. http://Http://www.Collegefootballplayoff.com and click the explainer 1 page pdf. The orange bowl is contracted to the ACC and anothet p5 conference team at large (being the big ten/sec or notre dame) The g5 is one of the 3 non contracted bowls. That is clearly stated. And I cant find any info about us being 4th or 5th or 19th. Just my input here. I was going to buy the magazine just to see but its not out yet apparently. Would be strange if I know more about the CFP than phil steele does, so thats why I doubt this whole debacle, steele would understand the playoff system.  Several others out there do that are smaller. Including sbnatiom and nationalfootballpost.

That being said. This is from an SB natiom article about the orange bowl as well

"The Orange has conference ties, but this year's other three non-Playoff New Year's bowls do not. The Orange will take the top non-Playoff ACC team and the top team from among the Big Ten, the SEC, and Notre Dame"

Ill include a link to NFP for those who still think I do nothing to contribute to the board.

  • could be a mistake on Phil's part or it could be that because The Noles are in the playoffs the conf tie in doesn't extend to ACC #2 but that is just a wild guess.

Exactly morph, reminds me of this quote from Cato in an article several weeks back.

    Quote
“It motivates us a lot,” Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato said, “but no game is won on paper.”

I love the publicity too and it's helping renew the national interest in the program but they have to go out there and win them one at a time and not take any team for granted or be looking to a future opponent. There will be a huge bull's eye on their backs this year.

  • Wow. Thanks sports, that is crazy but I guess its not too outlandish for one not to know the cfp scenarios, being the first year. I am just surprised he doesn't, being the biggest name in the cfb preseason prediction mag world.

And ohio that would make sensr, but I have seen nothing where the sugar, rose, or orange gets out of their contracts with those conferences. I would like us to nab the fiesta bowl, being the only one that was a true bcs bowl out of the 3 we can go to. But it is played out west, so the old chikfila in atlanta is probably our best option in terms of attendance. Id just be excited to go to any of the 3. Be a huge step for our program and recruiting.
