  • Last year I joined the Thunderclub.  Honestly, it was a pretty decent amount of money for me and I decided I'd spend it elsewhere this year...still on MU, but in different places.  Anyhow, tonight I got a call to renew my pledge to the Marshall Annual Fund, asking for the same amount amount of the gift to the TC (I think I gave to the annual fund last year, but it wasn't nearly that much, probably $100 or so).  Anyhow, I just thought the timing was very odd and the fact that there was no mention that the money that had been given to the Thunderclub last year was pitched to me as would I like to give an equal amount to the annual fund this year.  For those who are unaware of the difference, the Thunderclub was directed to atheltics.  The annual fund is unrestricted gifts that the university can spend as it pleases...wonder if they are running a flag up the pole and seeing how contributors react?

    Anybody else get any calls?

  • Yes.  I was called last week about the annual fund.  I doubt very seriously the call you got had anything to do with BP's retirement.

  • I'm a member as well and when I gave, I wanted to make sure that the money was going only to athletics - it was.  The reason you get info from the annual fund is that the TC uses them as a vehicle to collect the cash.  No sense in setting up another organization and saves on overhead.

That said, I threw mine in the trash.  I will call Lance West personally and ask HIS organization to send me Thunder Club specific info.  I think this year I will also ask for a signed letter from him stating that my money will entirely go to the coaches, assistants and olympic sports.

Last year, I revisited how I give, for good reason.  Just like many charities, it's sometimes difficult to get your money working where you feel it's needed.  Instead of giving to the Big Green, I now give to the thunder Club, the QB Club, the Tip Off Club and to Women's BB.  The only thing that goes to the Big Green is my seat assessments.

I don't have anything against the Big Green mind you, it's just that if you really want to know where your money is working, you have to keep as many hands off it as possible.

  • Blade, help me out here.  They, meaning the Big Green, always ask me how I want to earmark my donation.  i.e. (2) years ago I earmarked the entire donation to go to football, but last year I earmarked it football, womens bb, and olympic sports.  Is it getting done, or do I need to change the way, or vechicle by which my donation is being handled.  Thank's for your post.

p.s. If we lose every game 100 to 0, and go two seasons or more without a victory I'm still on the Herd's side, and my donation will continue, and my physical support will continue.  I love BP, and I thank him for what he has done; it has just been great, and we have been very fortunate,  but I love Marshall University more, and my heart, and support will always lie with MU.

    GO THUNDERINGHERD!

  • I guess it's just me being paranoid, Carolina.  I know that my points have been wrong before, ticket orders missed, etc...  (normal things that occur in business), so I felt more comfortable making my donations to the exact organizations I wished to target.

Last year at the paint the capital green, I sat down with Lance West and learned of all the clubs that are out there that originated to meet specific goals.  That's were I now give.

I was a little upset when I wrote that and like you, wouldn't reduce my giving just because of one or two people/events that pop up.  I have nothing against the Big Green at all.  I just target my donations to specific clubs now.
