No, Hamrick confirmed the series would be against a real football team.

Hey now!! Easy on my Browns!  They are getting better.

As far as games go do you guys think if we land an Auburn that we sell the game out? I don't think we would which is pathetic considering who it is. We didn't come close to selling out VT. Closest we come to selling out was with Kansas St which was our 1st big team in the stadium. Had that game been in the afternoon and not 11am it would have been sold out. Man it was hot that day. Just pathetic we can't get a sold out game against big teams like that.

We didn't sell out VT because end zone tickets were $50.

that's true.  but nobody's arguing that all 36-38k tix should be $15.  or that some of 'em shouldn't have been $50.  for no more often than we get a school like VT in here, i have no problem with $50 for the good seats.  but most people that sit in the endzone are there looking for a value.  most have families & they just can't afford to pay the going price for the sideline seats for 3-4 people.  most people that sit in the endzone just aren't gonna pay $200 for their family to watch 1 football game.  they just aren't.  so why ask that much for 'em?  if you wanna make it $5 more than a regular CUSA/MAC/FCS home game, fine, but don't double the price!  that's not smart marketing.  we don't have a waiting list to get tix to our games, our athletic dept needs to quit acting like we do.  i don't know how many $50 endzone seats we sold for VT, but i'm pretty confident in saying we probably would've sold more than 2x that many had they been $25, which would've resulted in more revenue.

So you lose 6000 fans that are looking for a value at 15 a piece, but gain 4000 who are there just to say they saw he opposing team play.  No matter how you put it, you can't just discount 2000 tickets at the last minute, and you can't discount them early and sale out cheap, leaving the possibilit you may have sold out at 50 a piece.

Bad marketing is devaluing your product. Ala ohios 35 dollar season tickets... good luck to them when they want to raise them. You can go down in price but good luck going up. $50 for a game like VT isnt bad at all compare it to other programs. Either you want to succeed or you don't.

And you certainly can't sell them for 50 then cut them and sell them for 25 in the last few days and piss everyone off... unless you are ready to refund everyone and %^&* the bed on your revenue. I think the $50 price tag may also influence some to buy season tickets to come to all the games for another 70.

Either way, 36k was a revenue booster and we still have nearly a full house during bad times in the program.

  • I usually use only about half the season tickets I buy anyway. I am all for charging more for a higher value opponent.  You could make an argument that it makes sense to discount it back to the cost of a regular ticket to stimulate season ticket sales.  I think there were both some WVU fans and VT fans who bought season tickets and sold (or tried to sell) the rest on Stub hub to recoup some of their money.

  • I buy season tickets because I enjoy going.  If one game has a higher value I don't have a problem with that either.  I also would not have a problem if the endzone tickets are NOT marked up much for that big value game as my season tickets are.  My tickets are better than those and should cost more than then and to be honest...I would rather see more fans get to the stadium so why not a cheaper price.  you never know when you will get those fans hooked and they come back.  I don't necessarily mean drop the price the last week for the game but start it out at the normal price.  Say the Purdue game next year has a ticket price of $45.  Make the endzone tickets $30.  That is still price close to normal as it is only marked up $5.  As the saying goes...an unsold ticket never buys a coke and popcorn.  Will it make much of a difference in Revenue?  Maybe not but it might get that fan to come back the next game and the next game etc.

i believe marshall makes next to nothing in terms of concessions sales. we make a lump sum from sodexho. then they work with vendors to sell items in the stadium, set the prices, and take the revenue from concession sales.

Since Bama is the only school of the ones any of us have mentioned that is known to be in "desperate" enough straits to pursue it, one theory would be that in order to accommodate Bama for the 2015 game they need, we're wanting to see if Kent State will move our game with them, or failing that, to buy out the FCS game we've got... so, it could easily be a little more complicated, and need some time to sort some things out to the attorneys' satisfaction.
