  • Everyone always mentions the Virginia Tech game.  We must remember that was during a dark time for MU football, apathy was at an all time high, and we were coming off a 44-7 loss to Ohio U.  If we get an Auburn type team in here, with the competitive teams we are now fielding and the excitement building again for Herd football, it would be standing room only.Probably set a stadium record.

  • And concerning lowering prices for games and "devaluing" the product.  A buddy of mine did the $65 deal this year.  That covered the first two games and you get a free ticket to future games with every win.  So, he basically got season tickets for $65, more than half off what I paid.  And you know what?  I don't care.  I am glad he is getting to go to the games and it doesn't bother me at all that he is going cheaper than I am.  You get people in the gate.  They have fun and become fans who will spend money.  Most eventually decide they are going to go anyway, might as well get season tickets.  And that is how you grow your fan base.  Make it affordable and a great atmosphere for families.

  • I'm so sick of hearing the whining about ticket prices.  It makes me want to...whine.   ::)

No one was whining about ticket prices.  People were lamenting the fact the VT game wasnt a sell out.  I simply pointed out the reason it wasn't a sell out, and it was absolutely the reason.

We don't have 40k fans who are going to pay $50/ticket, we just don't.  Now, people are saying the game raised more revenue than a sellout would've at lower prices, yes that is probably likely.  And I don't necessarily have an issue with that.   But for people to be all "OMG we cant sell-out even when a big name school comes to town!"  Well, there is more to the issue other than people just deciding to show up or not show up.

Reality is often not as black and white as we want to make it on a message board.

Noone said it was black and white.  Some of the same people that complain about our strength of schedule are the same ones complaining about the ticket prices for the big games.  I see it at work as well as on message boards, facebook, etc.  If you want to bring in higher profile teams you're going to have to be willing to pay more money to see MU play them.  I'm not saying you in particular...I'm saying MU "fans" in general.  If we don't put @$$es in seats when the big names come to town, guess what...they quit coming to town.

I was very disappointed when the Joan wasn't sold out for this game.  Maybe my view is scewed because I literally heard people who claim to be MU fans say they weren't going to pay that price to see them play.  People who I know for a fact could afford the tickets. The same people who talk about eating meals at the 50 plus dollar a plate restaurants.  That is the EXACT attitude that holds MU back.  You just simply can't have it both ways.

I don't know...maybe it's just my soap box.  In the grand scheme of things I believe $50 a game is quite the bargain to see my team play a big name opponent.

  • I remember, in a day not too long ago, when all those insider sources were so abysmally clueless in their insiderness about the new BB coach hire.

There are lots of fans that arent "fanatics" the way most of us on here are.  Just because you can afford something doesnt make it a good value to you.  And as someone stated earlier, our team was very poor at that time and there was very little excitement around the program.

More than a 100% mark-up for almost 1/4 of our stadium, given where our program was at the time, and the fact that we have never sold out a non-WVU game was simply too much.

Just a quick browse of ticket prices right now, I can get endzone tickets in Boise for BYU for $33, and Boise pretty much always sells out a similar sized stadium.  Endzone tickets at Florida state for either UVA or BC are $45, and UK v GA in Lexington for $55.

$ 50 for tickets that have a hard time selling at $15-$25 per ticket just doesn't make sense.  IF, your objective is a sell out.  If your objective is to make as much money as possible, then well maybe Hamrick did it right.

Edit: just in case I wasn't clear, I'm talking strictly about end zone tickets here.

  • UK had some $20 ticket specials for the Vandy game and this weekend they ran a special for $25 tickets against South Carolina.  I am not sure where the seats are but they are trying to draw as many fans as possible.  They are spending well over $100M to upgrade their stadium and build a new outdoor practice complex so they know if they can get some fans hooked...then they will come back and spend money on higher prices as the team continues to get good.

I think as a whole our ticket prices are pretty darn good for what we put on the field.  I don't have a problem with what I pay at all.  The ticket office now days are doing things to provide discounts, etc so I think we are on the right path.  They have really have worked on new things with each game.  I am sure if we could do things over with Va. Tech we might make some changes.   It will be interesting to see what we do next year when Purdue comes.

  • i believe marshall makes next to nothing in terms of concessions sales. we make a lump sum from sodexho. then they work with vendors to sell items in the stadium, set the prices, and take the revenue from concession sales.

that is accruate...it is the saying I am using.  Coke and popcorn could be changed with shirts, etc.  You know what I mean unless you have been talking to a family members of yours and she cursed your brain!!!   ;D
