  • Please. Can we make it a point to not use the p-word on this board, which only reinforces the inferiority perception thing? Even the Playoff website calls them "contract" conferences. Can we not use that instead? How bout it?

Agree 100%. Nothing but a marketing term by those with vested interests.  The entire G5 should try to rebrand the p word as C5 or something.

  • Personally, I don't have napolean syndrome, so p5 doesnt bother me. Contract conferences takes too much energy and to me, signals the same inferiority as p5 vs g5. P5 is generally accepted and widely used, so to avoid confusion i will probably use p5. Not that anything is wrong with c5.

Good point... people like brevity... C5?... works for me... or, how about con-5... hehe... I think I like that even better.  :P

  • Why not call it what it is, the Powerful Conferences.  Address the issues, not the name.  Anything could happen, but my money is on the fact that ESPN, Fox, NBCSN, etc. will have more impact on solidifying P5 than we'll have trying to dethrone it.  I'll reserve my energy for things that matter more to me than what someone else wants to call themselves.

We'd be better off changing the impact / meaning of the G5 from Group of 5 to the "Great 5"; or "Growing 5", or "Grounded 5", etc.  Lets make the group of 5 powerful, not pitiful; feeling sorry for ourselves and being disgruntled about what others are doing, casting upon us.  I'm tired of the pouting and feeling sorry for ourselves.  Quit trying to change others and change ourselves. It works better.

Woo is me, I am so lowly because of the power of others have over me.  Can someone help me?  Can someone change their name as it is soooo wrong?

Come on folks, let's get over it and make ourselves better instead of pretending others have some unearned advantage or powerful name that we feel misrepresents them or us.

  • whf, I rarely disagree with you, but just how much "energy" do you perceive that it exhausts to use contract 5 or con 5 instead of power 5?

    It's a small thing.

    But it's also a misnomer.

We are not weaklings, and its a subtle swipe at us that so easily doesn't have to be acknowledged/promoted.

Again, this isn't going off the rail... by virtue of the official source, they are labeled "contract conferences." We should embrace that for our own purposes just as they may embrace power 5 for their own purposes.

We may not "dethrone" the label, but just out of principle, we certainly don't have to support its use.

  • I use words and phrases to express my views, not to gain the approval of other posters.

If you don’t want to see me referring to the power 5 as the power 5, I’d suggest you simply skip reading my posts.

I’m certainly not going to let the likes of you dictate what I say or how I say it.

Somehow, given all of his stalking and animosity and the degree to which he appears disturbed, I figure 24 and this little girl have to be related. Just my guess.

True. Well, "clown" might be a bit strong, but mostly true.

Anti-climatic maybe... leaks happen. But that doesn't make him a clown. If by "anti-climatic" you actually meant "somewhat of a let-down"... and that's the context, given the previous sentence... care to name one that was a let-down? Help me out. I don't recall any. But maybe my pro-Hamrick bias just is that thick.

    Don't be so arrogant.

Oh and stop stalking me  :'( boohoo  :'( boohoo

  • I stand corrected... yes, 1-2 weeks... and even then, you didn't say something outrageous or incoherent, so I can't say it even mentally registered that it was you that time.

But yeah. Still. Don't assume things are targeting you that aren't targeting you. I never took any notice of what terms you used or didn't use. I'm not keeping a list. Some of my best friends on the board might have used the p-word for all I know. It's not an attack. The first time I even brought it up, the subject header was something like, "Could this finally be that one thing that we all can agree on?"

hehe... I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that Wolowitz and Koothrapali stuck up their hands in protest.

  • How long it had been is not exactly a major point, Howard... but I understand why you prefer not to address the major point... always a bit awkward to assume it was all about you, only to find out it had nothing to do with you.

But yeah, I also have no problem admitting a mistake, especially of that kind.

    How about you?

How much does your ego bleed when you find out you mis-spoke, eh?

I seem to recall a time when you argued passionately that Tulane's situation showed that conference expansion was market-driven, then argued that it was driven by program success not much later. I asked you about that, but strangely you never replied. Maybe you were just really, really busy, though. Yeah. That's the ticket.

    Whatever, Howard.

  • hehe... yeah, Howard, it's allllllll about you... absolutely.

    Obsessed?

Obsessed is what happens when a person actively seeks out another person, then pops into threads without any actual content to offer, but rather only to play cheerleader.

    Sound like anyone you know?

No, Howard, I sometimes just have a knack for remembering when certain people leave discussions dangling at odd but interestingly convenient times, arguably to salve a wounded ego that his conflicting arguments were brought to light (... particularly when the said person targeted me in a personal attack from out of nowhere... kinda like anyone else who takes a hit from someone else without provocation).

    Obsessed?

Look in the mirror. You took something I said to a broad audience... I dunno what... and evidently took it personal, and have been watching for opportunities to take shots at me ever since. (Nice thing about a message board... as you've just demonstrated with my 2-3 weeks error... what you said and did doesn't disappear... backing that up is just a keyword search away if I cared to invest the time.)

Yeah. That's what "obsessed" looks like. No wonder you and 24 have found each other to be such a comfort in the Howard and Raj way you have.

  • So let's see if I understand this.

    Given the choice of

    (a) presenting yourself as originally as a person espousing two different conclusions to the same question (irrational), then as a person prone to stalking behaviors (obsessive), then as a person paranoid that he's being targeted (egocentric)

    ...or...

    (b) denying yourself the entertainment of jerking someone around who you despise...

    you choose "a."

I must admit... I don't mind being jerked around, then... seems we both are satisfied with the outcome of your choice.

  • Ya know...

Some people believe that there actually are adolescents in this world who reject everything they hear from adults simply on the basis of who is saying it and a desperate need to assert their maturity...

Ironically enough, providing evidence that they're not actually intellectually competent, ie, mature enough, to make assessments on the merits of the issue, but instead, deflected by their own insecurities and more concerned to be perceived as thinking like an adult than to actually think like an adult.

But I don't believe that. That just can't be.

    Can it?

When were you born, barry? Just curious.
