by Doug Smock, Staff writerHUNTINGTON — Perhaps it’s good for Marshall to have its second bye week of the season next week, so players and coaches can be more relaxed as the first college football playoff rankings come out Tuesday. The first rankings are hailed as a benchmark of sorts, as the College Football Playoff Selection Committee meets for the first time. In the Herd’s case, it will see how well its undefeated season plays with the panel of 11 men and one woman. The conventional wisdom puts the 23rd-ranked Thundering Herd in a mythical battle with East Carolina to be the “Group of 5” representative in the major bowls, with Boise State and several other teams building their resumes.Marshall may not have advanced its cause with its 35-16 win Saturday over Florida Atlantic. Then again, ECU didn’t wow over anybody with a 31-21 win over Connecticut.
