  • Chad Pennington quote:

"Coach Pruett has been the cornerstone of Marshall University for nearly ten years. His passion for the university and his football players is beyond words. Coach Pruett has been a mentor for a lot of players, including myself. I give him credit for helping to develop me into the man I am today. He has been instrumental in my life, as well as some of my college teammates and friends."

This was front page in March 10th Herald Dispatch print newspaper.
"I have heard people talk about the healing process - that sounds good - or closure," Dawson told the Los Angeles Times. "I don't know what closure is, but that area of my life will never be closed. But I feel alive again. I feel I can smile again."

  • It wasn't in the online version, at least I couldn't find it.

  • Check today’s Parkersburg paper. I haven’t made it to their online edition yet, but their print edition had an article on the front of the sports page with quotes from all the people you mentioned.

Of course being the Parkersburg rag they had to end the article with a totally worthless quote from weenie Rod.

  • Well, sort of...you couldn't expect Randy to actually pick up the telephone and comment about the man that saved him from a career as a McDonald's fry cook.   :-?

Nor could the writer of the article be expected to get her facts straight (see first paragraph).   :???:

    COLLEGE FOOTBALL

    Associated Press Writer

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- New York Jets quarterback Chad Pennington was considering going to Tennessee as a walk-on in the early 1990s. That was before he met Marshall coach Bob Pruett, who announced his retirement Wednesday.

"Coach Pruett has been the cornerstone of Marshall University for nearly 10 years. His passion for the university and his football players is beyond words," Pennington said Wednesday. "Coach Pruett has been a mentor for a lot of players, including myself. I give him credit for helping to develop me into the man I am today. He has been instrumental in my life, as well as some of my college teammates and friends."

Pruett is the most successful coach in school history, amassing a 94-23 record with a program that has brought Marshall national respect. Under his leadership, the school moved from Division I-AA and playing schools like Furman, The Citadel and VMI to Division I-A and opponents like Florida, Georgia and Ohio State.

Several of Pruett's former players are now NFL stars, including receiver Randy Moss and quarterback Byron Leftwich.

"He helped me to understand what it takes to play at a high level in college and in the professional ranks," said Leftwich, who now plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars. "He helped numerous players, as well as Marshall University, to bigger and better things."

Moss, who found a home at Marshall after losing scholarships at Notre Dame and Florida State before his college career ever really began, also remembers Pruett fondly although the two seldom talk these days.

"Randy has a lot of respect for coach Pruett and just wants to wish him well in his future endeavors," said Moss' agent, Dante DiTrapano of Charleston.
"Tell your friends, I can confirm you held your own against the brothers. :)"
