Certainly, Marcum has the option of selecting his school’s interim coach, Larry Kueck, the former offensive coordinator.

“Larry is the interim appointment,’’ Marcum said. “We decided what we needed to focus on is spring practice [which opens today]. No way should we delay that.’’

Marcum said, however, there is no guarantee Kueck will finish spring drills as the head coach. There are no guarantees at all, said the AD.

“We’ll search until a decision is made,’’ Marcum said. “If Larry is there at the end, great. If not, we’ll go in another direction. It is what it is.’’

  • This is good to see.  Kueck may be the guy for the job but I think we do needed to form a search committee to see who is interested.  Originally, I was thinking that waiting till after the season was the best thing to do but, upon reconsideration, I think its better, assuming someone new is brought in, to bring him in right after spring practice.  That gives the players time to learn his terminology and read his playbook before the start of fall practice.  Plus, you've then got a coach that can design recruiting around his system.

Again, I'm not saying it shouldn't be Kueck.  I just think that considering all options is a smart move.

  • I totally agree with you, Mako, but according to other posters it looks like the decision has already been made.  Like you said, Kueck may be the right man for the job, but I really want a serious search to occur because the best guy might be outside of our staff.

I don't think he signed, even though our main man tito has said so.  Wouldn't it already be out to the papers or the news stations if they found out Kueck already signed?  I'm sure they each have someone who reads these boards (for story topics, inside info, etc).  You would think the media would be able to get some information about a signed contract, considering Kueck is a state employee.  This is speculation, but am I right?

Strictly speaking, I too doubt anything has been pen-to-paper signed... but I also doubt that, if an agreement has been reached, that Marcum hasn't already had the contract drawn up, and that that's good enough for both sides for the time being.

  • Although I have no football coaching experience, I am officially removing my name from consideration for the head coaching position.

Word has it that I would not be able to tailgate prior to the football games - which was the deal breaker. :o

  • Do you guys think it is just something they are doing to make people think they are actually searching and really have given the go ahead to Kueck?   I have seen companies post jobs for a few days just because it is policy but in reality already have their person hired from within the company.  Just something people do.   Or they are putting it out there to see if they get an unreal candidate like a Solich to say hey I am interested then they would reconsider.

  • If that is the case, Thunders, then I think our athletic department administration is narrow-minded, and I would question their vision for the future of our program.  I respect Bob Pruett to death, but he should not have the final word on the new coach.  He is obviously going to be loyal to his to guys, and he should be.  This whole situation reminds me of what happened at North Carolina several years ago when Dean Smith retired right before the start of the season.  There are too many quality candidates, such as Snyder and Peterson, out there to not go ahead with a systematic search for a new coach.  This is not a knock on Kueck, it is a process that schools concerned about winning games year in and year out do to locate the best man for the job.
