BOCA RATON, Fla. — When Marshall senior quarterback Rakeem Cato was being recruited to the Thundering Herd, among the important people he met on campus was Marshall President Stephen Kopp.

“Everybody goes up and talks to him,” Cato said.

When Cato sat down with Kopp, the president had some lofty goals for the Miami, Fla., native.

“He told me he wanted me to graduate with a degree and an NFL contract,” Cato said. “Since my first day being here, that’s all that’s been in my head.”

Kopp has been on the minds of the entire Marshall football team as it prepared for Tuesday’s Boca Raton Bowl against Northern Illinois following his sudden, unexpected death Dec. 17. The team decided to honor him during the game with a special decal on the back of the players’ helmets.

FIFTH-YEAR SENIOR Demetrius Evans, a Belle Glade, Fla., native, was not available for Tuesday’s bowl game, ending his career after a four-catch, 47-yard final season. Evans did not practice in Marshall’s final two sessions at St. Andrew’s School, with Herd coach Doc Holliday saying only that his absence was a “personal matter” between him and Evans.

Anyone know what went on with Evans?
