  • Tweeted by Landon and Redd that Terrance Thompson a 6-7 power forward is on his way to MU. Was at Charlotte one semester and then ended up at Georgia Highlands JC. Avg something like 9 points and 8 rebounds. He will have 3 years to play at Marshall beginning 15-16 season.
I assume that barring any defections that we have given out all of our scholarships for the coming season.
Looks like a good get for Danny and The Herd!

  • Found this from the old Charlotte media guide...

So, he did a prep school, then Charlotte for a year, then a JV... so assuming he turned 18 in 2012 when he graduated HS, that makes him 21 this year with 3 years of eligibility remaining?

And, one has to wonder, given that he only started 3 games for Georgia Highlands... only averaged 6 minutes per game tho he played in 36 total... yet, 9.6 ppg?... 8.9 rpg?... dang... that's some SERIOUS production... there's got to be more to this story, b/c what coach leaves 62 pts per 40 minutes on the bench?

    EDIT

    Check out that FG%.

Perhaps that's a good reason to leave 62 pts per 40 min on the bench.

  • Those minutes per game are screwed up.  If you go here...

    http://stats.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2014-15/div1/boxscores/20141210_3qzy.xml

you will find the boxscores.  It shows every player as having played one minute in the game.

He was at Charlotte for less than a semester in the 14-15 school year then finish the 2014-15 year at Georgia Highlands. That means he has 3 years remaining.

We need a volunteer to go to the C-USA boards and ask Charlotte fans about him....

In looking at Charlotte stats, he NEVER played for them. He left before the season started

"He's an athletic big who can swing to the perimeter," D'Antoni said. "He's a solid rebounder who can run the floor and score inside and outside the 3-point area. He went for 23 points and 10 rebounds in the national junior college tournament semifinals. Not to mention he's a biology major who wants to go to med school. We're looking forward to having him."

I see that too. I knew he was at Charlotte and never played. That is the reason why.

  • My bias sensor starting beeping loudly as I read this...

    D'Antoni:
    Quote
"...Not to mention he's a biology major who wants to go to med school..."

I just did not expect that a basketball player who did a prep year and who after starting to go to a D1 program detoured back to JC would be a biology major, let alone have the ambition to become a doctor.

Kudos if that's all true, and I don't know why D'Antoni would say it if it wasn't. And shame on me for assuming the worst.

  • Just curious goherd, who would you be impressed with, a Deandre Kane, an Elija Pittman, or a Kevin Damayo (sp).  Come on give the kid some credit and don't be so quick to judge.  Austin Loop wasn't wanted by anybody and he has done alright for himself.  It takes more that just stats to be a good player prospect.  It takes character, coach ability, and work ethic to boot. Something that the three mentioned above lacked.

24 is kind of like Chuck "Done Deal" Landon, you can pretty much expect the opposite of what he says and expects.  Case in point, he said Devon Johnson would not be very good...he's also said the same about Birdsong so I look for him to have around 4000 yards and 30 TDs mininum.  ;D

  • Maybe, but this guy is no slouch, and offers a good mix of qualities to the squad DD is building.

    1.  As an entering freshman on his junior college team, he had to find his way among a group of second year players. Despite coming off the bench, Thompson averaged almost a double-double. By March when his team entered the national junior college tournament, he may have developed into the team's best player. In the tournament his points-rebounds totals were 5-12, 13-10, 11-10, 11-5, 13-15, 23-10, and 16-9. Again, these totals were all achieved as a non-starter.

    2.  He brings a physical inside presence that the Herd will need in 2015-16. Not only is Thompson an excellent rebounder, but he gets to the free throw line a lot. He shot 8 or more free throws in 10 games last season, including total free throws of 10, 12, 14, and 19 in individual games. That's a lot of blue-collar banging inside. He should be a good complement to the Herd's array of three point shooters.

    3.  Thompson is a winner. His prep school and junior college teams won 61 times and lost just 11. Both achieved recognition on a national level for their success, and this young man was a significant contributor.

    4.  He has 3 years of eligibility remaining, not the usual 2 for a junior college player.

    5.  Thompson chose the Herd at least in part because, as a biology major, it has a medical school! Perhaps the last power forward from Marshall to earn a medical degree was Larry "Doc" Watson in the early 80's, who I believe now serves as the team physician for the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL. "Doc" not only battled on the hardwood, but he received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from old Marshall U.
