  • I did see this in this past Sunday's Montreal Gazette:  "Turk Schonert remains the offensive coordinator, but will watch games from the spotter’s booth and no longer will specifically coach the quarterbacks. That goes to Anthony Calvillo, who had been the receivers coach. Then the new coach said this, "“I think (Calvillo) has too much experience in this league. Having him with Rakeem Cato and the young quarterbacks is the right thing to do. This lets Turk see the field better.”

Here's more from this past Monday's Montreal Gazette:  Pointing out that Schonert was a more "in your face type of coach," the writer says this, "On the other hand, Cato quickly pointed out, his former OC and QB coach at Marshall, Bill Legg, never yelled, and that worked out pretty well." “I’ve been around all kinds of different coaches. I’ve been through guys who like to coach in a soft way, coach without screaming. I respect them a lot more,” Cato said, interestingly. “I respect every coach in their own way. If you come out firing or in an aggressive way to get your point across, I respect it.

“If I have to come across a coach like Turk, who’s aggressive and who’s going to tell you when you’re wrong, I love that also because he’s right. It’s a fact. You have to play better. I don’t have a problem with none of them. I’m a rookie. I have to hush my mouth and take it.”

On Sunday, Calvillo said he would work on Cato’s footwork and cleaning up some of the drops — the progressions, right reads, timing, getting the ball out faster and making smart decisions. Cato, if he’s smart, will pay attention, embracing the knowledge and experience.

“I think it was a very good move for our team. Coach A.C., he had a great career here, a huge resumé here,” Cato said. “I think it was a great move to put a young quarterback fresh out of the league with a young group of guys.”

I have no allegiance to the Allouettes. I'll be rooting for the Als offense to suck while Cato is out. Just like the Jets when they cut Chad for that overrated, attention starved, weenie pic taker, Favre, I'll root for the other team while my guy is out.

  • Hopefully Cato is not injured too badly. Looked like he grabbed his leg when he was hit but walked off.

But don't forget the rest of the story. Chad goes to the Miami Dolphins, plays Favre and the Jets in the playoffs and eliminates them.

  • I gotta admit:

The Ti-Cats halftime tonight retiring #68 Angelo Mosca's jersey was touching & classic. I was going to channel surf & I got sucked in.

The Ti-Cats game atmosphere comes across great on TV...hell I wanna be there.

  • IMHO, Cato got hurt because they are not allowing him to roll away from the rush. He has been standing in the middle of the the backfield waiting for the old and slow Als' receivers to get open (Lewis has yet to do that and Stamps cannot catch). You cannot do that for a whole game without getting hurt and now Cato has an injury somewhere in his lower extremities.

Quick passes have worked for the screen TD by Rutley and the quick out to Green for 35. OTOH, the Montreal defense is giving the game away with stupid penalties (which they have done all year) and nothing changes. Same thing with the kick return team that constantly blocks in the back to stop big returns.

If Marsh stands around against the Ti-Cat blitzes we will see Air Canada by games end - and that guarantees a loss.

So what we know for sure is that firing HC Higgins didn't solve the team problems  - probably because Shonert has no imagination as an OC. Perhaps the owner fired the wrong coach.

  • Well the Als did run the ball well partly because Marsh is a physical beast, but Marsh is not a CFL level passer. IMO, this game cemented Cato as the Als' starter. I suspect that the "GM" Popp knows this & that's one of the reasons that Higgins is gone.

Schonert needs to go. Cato IS a potential all-CFL QB. He is better than the Ti-Cats' QB now. Obviously Schonert cannot put maybe the 2nd most talented QB in that league in positions to succeed & that he induced Cato to regress on his physical fundamentals is most damning. Cavillo, fortunately, is the QB coach now.

  • They complement each other very well. Marsh is the best short yardage QB in the league something Cat's small stature makes difficult. Marsh can throw well on the run but has been pretty much inactive in 3 years. He's also really well liked by his teammates. He will get better.

As for Hamilton. Its a great place to catch a game. The whole stadium is designed for a football fan experience. The site lines, lounges, common areas everything is first class and intimate. Customer service is also on another level. The team is owned by Redhat founder and Raleigh resident Bob Young.

Cato suffered a hip pointer and I think was kept out because Marsh's physical presence was exactly what was needed against Hamilton.

BC next week at home, should be a good night for Cato.

  • A whole new offense has to be designed around Cato but that won't be possible until the off season.

  • It turns out that Cato has been reported as having a hip pointer which usually takes at least two weeks to heal, but Cato says that he could have played last night if Marsh was injured. Rakeem also said that he would be ready to play next Thursday against Alex Bazzie and the BC Lions.

If he is put on the one game injured list, he certainly will be ready to go by the next scheduled game on 9/20 against Winnipeg.

In any regard, it is sometimes hard to believe CFL injury reports and actions such as putting DE Aaron Lavarias on the 6 game injured list for finger surgery.

I really don't totally agree. A lot of what the Als do now resembles the O Cato ran at Marshall. I do think that Cato missing preseason camp & (mainly his fault) not getting enough reps has hurt. Having Calvillo as a mentor should be good for Cato & for Calvillo...Cato is a film rat & apparently AC is also.

Also, I do believe there are pass protection issues with the O-line, that Rakeem has to bail early. I would bet, however, that your-alls O-line rates as the best in the CFL when it come to run blocking. In my experience watching CFL ball, most runs are draws. This season, the Als have successfully run power plays on 1st downs.
