    No. It was too risky.

Although it appeared Johnson was trying to play despite an ankle injury, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation say the 6-foot-1, 235-pound senior has a fractured disk in his back.

If that's true, that's a very serious injury.

So, instead of allowing Johnson to struggle through five carries for only nine yards before conceding to the injury with 5:01 remaining in the first quarter, Marshall should have had him sit out and begin the healing process.

It quite possibly could be a season-ending injury. But if so, Johnson does have a redshirt year available.

Marshall's football program is in need of more discipline.

  • You can't fracture a disk in your back because disks aren't bone. He could have a bulging disk or a ruptured disk but it is not fractured. he could have a fracture in a vertebrae though

  • Good point 429. Another thing what's up with the discipline comment?  I thought that was Docs strong point.

  • He has a herniated disc. I heard about this last week but didn't want to say anything because I wasn't sure it was true. Apparently it is the truth. Hopefully he can get a medical redshirt for this year because low back disc and nerve pain is nothing to fool around with. I would recommend him having the surgery to repair it, get 100% healthy and come back strong next year.

  • Chuck also mentioned Hyleck Foster has joined the RBs to add much-needed depth. He was a star RB in HS.

Sounds like he is going to be needed and may be his best position. Chuck had some good information today.

  • That is a huge loss....time to hope for the best this year and understand it is likely to be a bumpy ride....to expect 10 wins now would not be reasonable...losing everything that we now have from last years team...7 or 8 wins is what I expect.

We are a shell of last years team.

  • Hasnt DJ played in to many games to get redshirt?  He'd have to apply for a hardship waiver at this point and those are never a sure thing

Could be a cracked vertebrae. Obviously Chuckle doesn't have all the facts but this is very concerning.

  • I'm told the medical hardship waiver (medical redshirt) rule requires that you do not play in more than 30% of the scheduled games and that when calculating 30% you can round up.  So 30% of 12 games is 3.6 games - rounded up to 4 games.  If all of that is correct, and he does in fact have a season-ending injury, then he should meet the requirements to qualify for a medical redshirt.

  • hope for full recovery, we may never see his full potential like others before him but we don't want him to have long term back problems.

not a good sign when a team is constantly scrambling players around(ok, grasping at straws may be extreme) even if it is still early in the season....sign of lack of true depth/play makers at key positions? overdone strength-conditioning?  we know Doc is a better than average recruiter...i wonder if Doc's teams struggled more often than not regarding injuries, relative to other teams?  does he bring back injured players to soon for the sake of winning?

  • I wish DJ well. He is an awesome player. Hope he can either come back or redshirt, but you have to be careful with him.

For the foreseeable future, that means we have Pittman, Davis and possibly Foster at RB, right?

Our league is not so tough.  We can still win it but it will take a lot of focus.

Hopefully it is a herniated disc and not a fractured vertebrae, if this is true. I hate that.

Also, when the Coaching Staff and Athletic Department refuse to issue an injury report (even a vague one that just tells you whether a guy is probable or out for a game with no further detail), this is what happens. Speculation.

  • Coaches don't make decisions about who plays injured...the team doctors do.  Foster will add depth but i'd be worried about him in pass protection....he also seems to be having trouble catching ball with any consistency.  The good thing is he is fast and capable of making big plays and can still be used in a variety of ways from that position.

  • I'm choosing to wait for an announcement from the Athletic / Football Departments on Devon Johnson. If he does have a season-ending injury, I'm sure they'll announce that; there would be no reason to keep that one a secret (like temporary position injuries, etc.)

As for Foster, I hope (candidly) that he does better at RB than he has at slot receiver; don't know if it is nerves or what, but he's been the least (or near the least) productive receiver on the team so far this year.

Hyleck has a bad habit of fumbling, he makes me nervous every time he touches the ball.

This^. I agree! Rockhead needs to get healthy for the team and increase his draft status.

  • I had heard from someone on the medical staff that after the Purdue game that we had an injured player and that the injury was not only season ending but perhaps career ending.  It sounds unfortunately that the story may have some merit.

I'm telling you it is not like it used to be....too much liability for any injury that might be serious (excluding cramps etc)  Coaches rely on doctors to say a guy is physically ready to go.  Now if a player isn't straight up with the doctors and says "put me in coach...i'm good" it can certainly happen.

The one player I can think of that I haven't seen and no one has talked about since Purdue is Chris Williams-Hall at nickle/CB.

    Boom!  Gauntlet thrown down.

Day to day vs. season ending.  I assume we will know soon enough but no way does a coach refute an injury report and call a player "day to day" if he is done for the year.
