  • Apparently, it involves:

    1)  playing small
    2)  not rebounding
    3)  In transition, we are supposed to be running the "true" fastbreak
    4)  In the half court set, we pass the ball around to get off a 3 pointer

    Is that about it?

It sounds like what most high schools run when they have a 6'4 center....

Because he is a high school coach.  That is what he is brought here.  We need a college coach.  It's that simple.

DD might know his X's and O's of basketball and he was a good player but he is in wayyyyyyy over his head and this hire will be worse than the Snyder hire...

  •   He responded by saying he has been telling people all his life that he wasn't handicapped so why should he start now.  After travelling all over the world he told me one day, You know I have been all over the world and when I come back here it is the most negative and depressed area I have ever seen.  I must agree with him.  Many of you are the most negative I have ever seen.

Well said TRS...Being a tri-state expat myself, I notice the negative vibe in H-ton when we visit.

One of the Big 12 schools (I forgot who) got their butts handed to them by a D-II b-ball club.

True. But he is also an NBA coach.

I believe the only NBA teams he coached were the ones where Mike was the head coach? Nothing wrong with hiring family.

That stated, I really hope Danny can do the job. I know Danny fairly well and he has a positive attitude! Can you imagine being nearly 70 years old and doing the job?

  • Some things to note here:  First, Newberry did NOT PLAY an Iron Man 5 Seniors:  check the box score of the minutes played and that they had ELEVEN PLAYERS who scored.  Second, note that some of our starters from last year played SIGNIFICANT minutes:  Loop, 29; Taylor and Edmonds, 21 and 20; and Nikolic 15.  Also, apparently whomever was on the floor, no one on the Herd play much defense, and we were outrebounded by a D-II school.

Finally, as to looking ahead, what has happened to the supposedly 2 new recruits that Danny D and staff were after during this signing period?  No official announcement or anything official from the Athletic Department.  If recruiting and/or upgrading our Talent level is the real key to significantly improving our basketball at Marshall, is "no news" really "good news", or "bad", on the recruiting front?

  • Taylor, less than a third of the game, Loop, just at 1/2 of the game, Edmonds was not a starter, and was injured and recouping for months. Nkiloic, 3/4th of a half of the game.  And these guys, other than Loop and Taylor barely played at the same time.

Look at the stats from the other perspective and see how many minutes the kids who have never played a college basketball game played.  Lets face it, if your perspective is pessimistic and anti-progress for the team you're not going to see this as anything other than an utter failure. If you're perspective is to look at how much all the new guys got to play, even after at least one has been announced to probably red-shirt then you're probably happier and accept the loss a bit better too.

All this being said, I think we also need to realize that Danny kept his whole staff in tack, so they must believe in something. Not one of them is hoping to be a loser and lose their position in the coaching ranks/other opportunities.

  • So how many years does it take to teach a player Danny's system, please don't tell me 3 years....

I can say from experience, if kids aren't used to this type of game play and pace, they will need a full year to be comfortable in the system. We have very few returnees from last year so.....

  • i support the program and the style of play that DD is trying to establish.

im also pretty confident that we will be much improves with just dribble penetration and drawing the defense. then kick for a more open 3. If defense doesnt collapse you get a high percentage shot.

I havent seen practice but have no doubt we would be much better with our best guards in the game.

And he was often running practice under Mike's tenures.

To Slee...you can take 80% of the 'college' coaches. Most act like spoiled children during games. Most teach styles of the game which is unwatchable, acting like they're generals of an army. This season, I'm looking for style and to approach 0.500.

AFA approaching 70? Bear in mind his dad is about 100. If DD is having fun doing his job, the age is no factor.

  • The 70 year old thing is just a convenience for Mike Hamrick and Dan, because after about 5 years (since this year 2 is really year 1), he'll get 5 years and then he can retire do to age, regardless of record.....He'll pick up a couple million dollars and probably leave with a sub .500 record overall....

  • Johnnyherd, not sure that DD would walk away with 2 million.  Hell, from all the info you can find, don't believe DD is making close to what we were paying Herrion.  Heard he took the job for a lot less, probably could check MU salaries under WV state employees Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).  Hopefully Danny will have an overall successful tenure at MU and when he does leave, hopefully under good terms for all involved, it will be of his choosing, and that the MU basketball program will be in a lot better shape than he found it!!!

  • I would make the point to everyone on this thread that last year's team started out terrible and got better as the year went on. Can any of you basketball geniuses argue with that? or can we accept that this in-season improvement was a fact borne out by the results? Why don't you consider the possibility that these young men might improve this year? They seem like a group of smart hard working young men. I'm proud that they have Marshall written on their chest. I cannot say that about every player that has come through here under prior coaching staffs.  At least they we won't have anyone tweeting about how much they want to leave. If they do, Dan will accommodate them which is how that should be handled.
