  • CSX will eliminate 121 management jobs in Huntington. I know some of these employees are season ticket holders. I feel for them and their families. So sad!

  • Take it from me... It does suck.  Those 121 jobs also don't take into account the union positions like Engineers and Conductors that have already been lost.

  • I feel for anybody that goes through this.  This is tough.

  • I believe it will be a lot more than 121. The 121 number is the amount of managers and supervisors that will stay on board over the next several months during the transistion.

With nearly 700 job losses from Armco, the who knows how many from CSX and then take into account the jobs that feed into this plants, it's a bad time for this area.

This is coal related and Armco is not a major factor in the reduction of these jobs. Mines and power plants using coal are the issue. Huntington used the largest inland water port in the USA and one of the largest ports in the US due to the coal passing through Huntington. The reduction of the coal industry is causing a ripple effect in Huntington. Remember, the railroad and coal built Huntington.

The local economy is going to take a major hit. Losing 120+ high paying jobs will cost this area millions. With the job losses combined, Armco, CSX, and your looking at a min 500 million or in rough terms, a half-billion  dollar loss if not more for this area.

  • Very sad news for the familes who may have to move as there is little opportunities for new jobs in the area.I had to leave in 1984 and still regret it,but I had no choice due to lack of jobs in area.

  • Hell, this is not just limited to the Huntington area.  Norfolk Southern just announced last week a similar move in moving its Pocahontas Division out of Bluefield with a similar number of lost jobs IN WEST VIRGINIA!!  Just another result of Barry Boy's War on Coal, as obviously if there is no coal to haul, then the railroads have no need for all their personnel when the trains are idled.  Should hit some of those like a lightening bolt who have naively believed all the leftist "progressive" propaganda (see the daily tripe in the Charleston Gazette, for example) that the radical socialist policies of the current administration have no bearing on our state, its economy and people and are just a figment of imagination of a segment of right wing extremists.  Reality is hitting home, folks!!

  • What did anyone think would happen when one of the state's major products gets attacked by Obama.  Nothing good for the state has happened under him.

  • I'm one of those that's had to leave.  I'm now 3+ hours away from my wife and children trying to salvage my railroad career, all while trying to find a suitable job back near Huntington that'll pay close to what I earn with CSX.  I'm not a 6-figure guy, but there's very little that I've found within a 50 mile radius.

  • When as state builds it's entire economic base on one industry, it's bound to come back and bite them on many fronts. Barry's attack has sped up the process.

Not forgetting those "fans", Flat Tire.  Really, shouldn't we be more concerned with ALL THOSE WHO ARE AFFECTED, INCLUDING THEIR FAMILIES?  Whether they are fans of a certain team or not, there is a very human issue, and tragedy, here, whether in Huntington, Bluefield, or elsewhere in WV or the tri-state.

  • This thread has turned into a political bashing. I do understand the frustrations! No one party is to blame for our failing state and local economy. Everyone is to blame! Maybe now all parties will start working together in bi-partisanship as they should have years ago.

Or you can hold out hope that yet another Democrat President (this time the worst of the lot in Hillary)  will be the answer...... The Federal Government can only promise and give away so much before there is nothing left to give away........at some point businesses MUST be allowed to thrive and invest in growth to generate jobs............the highest corporate tax in the world and the increasing costs of benefits (read ObamaCare) do little to create jobs.............We need a business friendly President and Congress to swing the pendulum back in the direction of economic growth.

Sorry, one party is to blame.  The one who was in power in West Virginia for 82 of the last 84 years and whose President said "If somebody wants to build a coal-fired power plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them" under his plan laid out in 2008.

Well if you want to blame one party that's OK!. Truth to the matter is that West Virginia has suffered long before this administration and unless our state leaders wake up, we're going to continue to suffer.

  • 1st: Any economy based on mineral extraction is boom-bust-boom-bust.

2nd: Most of the easy to reach coal in the region has been removed.

3rd: Though politicians of both parties have had there thumbs slightly balance the scales against coal (for good reasons...remember acid rain & the problem of mercury salts polluting bodies of water), it's market forces which are killing the coal-for-fuel market. The new-ish oil fields in the Midwest are under market pressures from cheaper higher quality crude from the Saudis as we speak...somewhat a similar situation.

4th: What hurt WV is that the mineral & timber rights were & are mainly owned by outside interests & those outside interests bought the dem politicians just as outside interests have been buying repub politicians in the recent years.

5th: svherd is correct about the 'one industry'. In addition, education has not been valued in the state. In the past, H-ton had a diverse industrial base, which distinguished the city from most of the state. And, no it was not solely the unions' fault nor really solely managements' fault.
In memory of Dr Daniel P Babb who taught so much to so many.

I agree with what you're saying about economic growth. Unfortunately, West Virginia has lacked behind for years in just about every thing imaginable. At some point, we as a state have to look deep and examine why we're constantly lagging behind the rest of the nation. Everything from education, taxes, health care, etc....Seems like West Virginia is always near last or next to Mississippi.
