  • So true! I almost forgot about the steel industry and how hard it was hit. Nothing stays the same as the world turns. If you ever get a chance and take a drive on rt 2 along the Ohio river, you will see a lot of closed steel plants in Steubenville, Weirton, and many more. Youngstown, Ohio lossed half of it's population do to steel closings. West Virginia is going to have to reinvent the wheel. We have an abundance of natural gas and timber we need to take a serious look at. I really feel for our coal industry the miners and their families, it's been a way of life for many over the decades. Hell, I just read where Alaskan's are no longer getting royalty checks, because of oil prices being so low. In fact, the Governor is now talking about raising taxes to offset slumping oil prices.

    Two problems E-MAN:
1st: Most of the timber & mineral rights are owned by 'outsiders'.

2nd: All economies based on extracting resources are subject to deep-deep busts.
In memory of Dr Daniel P Babb who taught so much to so many.

That seems to always be the case with this state. Everyone owns the rights to our most precious resources, yet they always are from another state or country. This state should be booming! It's so frustrating to see us lag behind the rest of the nation other than Mississippi....

  • my grandmother worked in that building, my whole family are railroaders, it totally sucks.

that said, this isn't because of one party or the other, the world is changing, markets are changing, everyone kind of has a hand in the devaluing of coal and the coal market slumping, leading to their "partners" having to cut back as well.

  • This is just the start.  From a high up source within CSX, they are looking at closing the stretch from Russell to Clifton Forge VA and leasing out the running of this region to R J Corman.
