Star-Tribune staff writerDENVER -- The Mountain West Conference thinks there is room for two college sports cable television networks.
The league bolted cable giant ESPN in December for upstart CSTV in December, impressed with CSTV's commitment to college sports. But shortly thereafter, ESPN announced the formation of its own college-only network.
ESPNU launched on March 4.
"There's a lot of institutions, a lot of fans," said MWC commissioner Craig Thompson. "They are competitors, but ultimately they will somewhat feed upon each other. Right now on the Direct TV satellite dish, CSTV is channel 610. ESPNU is channel 609.
"What a casual sports fan or a guy with nothing to do is going to do is flip over, and if he doesn't like what's on 609, he's going to go to 610."
Thompson also said he believes CSTV will have more live and diverse programming.
