  • Screw Donnie.  He has been over paid at MU and UCF far too long.  He is an asst coach period

I think everyone on this board would be doing the same for their families, if you ever get a chance to make the money Donnie made truth be told. I hated it that Donnie went to ucf, period! AGAIN, FOR THE VERY LAST TIME!, LET ME EMPHASIZE, IT WORKED OUT BEST FOR US IN THE END! Think if Donnie was still here and not left, Dan D'Antoni wouldn't be here.

  • For me it was more where he went to and how he did it that passed me off.  He basically had his bags packed while we were still playing and people can say he's a great guy but that is not a sign of a high character guy.  It was low class to put it mildly and he deserved the ass reaming he got when he came back to Huntington.  That was one of my favorite moments in the HC.

Are you saying you would have preferred that he stayed as the Marshall coach?

  • Maybe he and Mike just rubbed each other wrong. Do believe he loved the Herd. Where he went to had a lot to do with the animosity.

then what in the world was hamrick doing giving him an extension?  mike signed him to an extension before his final yr here.

Well, it's the truth brother! You don't think Doc would take a hefty 15 million or more contact with the eerdiots if they came calling? The only man that's ever been loyal to us is the captain Bobby Pruett, who turned down 11 million from Houston. To this day believe it or not, Pruett has a lot of haters and (some are Herd fans on here)!

  • If they do dump Donnie I’d suggest they look at Tom Herrion.  I think he’d be an excellent fit for that place.

    LMAO,  :)

I don't like a person that is still working for us but is too busy working on his plan to win for ucf to coach in his last games.  it's like stealing.  I'm glad he is gone and happy we have DD and will laugh when he is fired at ucf.

  • Bobby Pruett didn't turn down $11 million to go to Houston, unless they were offering him an 11 year contract.  They offered him $1 million per year, which I admit was a huge salary in those days.

I wish Bobby would have never quit.  I loved that man coaching for us.

  • My understanding was that DJ wanted a bonus that was in his contract for making a "postseason" tournament. However when the contract was written I believe the only postseason tournaments were the NCAA and NIT. Then came the CIT, CBI, and others. DJ wanted bonus for CBI and Hamrick said no. I seriously doubt that was the entire reason for the betrayal but it probably broke the camels back.

  • He was talking to UCF in January his last year here...January!....like beginning of conf schedule (he denied it but it was told to me by a couple of people who would know).  We were recruiting almost nobody his last year.

After living in Florida for some time it had to be appealing for his family etc, plus the increase in salary.  Like the saying goes, "happy wife, happy life"...and that's not something you'd say in public. Like others, had a hard time with how he left, but a harder time with him going to UCF.  In a random meeting I talked with Billy D's brother in law a few years ago and he told me DJ couldn't believe the MU fans felt the way he did about him after he left....he really had a hard time understanding it. BTW, I think Herrion ate his lunch most of time in head to head matchups.

I wish him no ill will and admit that it is a petty thing to hold onto a grudge knowing it turned out better for MU, but every time they are on TV i'll still flip it around to pull for whoever they are playing.  But i'd probably be doing that even if DJ wasn't there...because it's UCF.  He never looks very engaged to me but maybe it's his demeanor. I also agree their support is horrid.  With 30K+ students etc the place is always half empty or more.  Maybe it's that Indian corn seating or that aweful looking floor, but you'd expect more for a school of that size in that area.

I'll find the article for you. With incentives and so forth, Pruett's contract at Houston would have been worth 11 and half million total. My point was that coach Pruett was loyal to Marshall.

Bison, I agree the way that went down, left a sore spot with me too. It was shocking to me, because DJ always told me how much he loved Marshall. Coaches are always going to negotiate behind the scenes, especially with greedy agents we see it all the time. Case in example, the eerdiots Rich Rod leaving them and negotiating with Michigan. It's all about money, money, money in the world today, very few are loyal!

  • He left to a division foe.  That's a big no-no.  He left when there were whispers of the Big East expanding and realignment was first being discussed.  Thought he could get on with UCF and be playing Villanova etc in a year or two.  The first realignment didn't happen when they thought and it took two more years for the rest to come down.   But he'd already made his commitment to UCF.  That's why he left and went there.  To get into the Big East and pad his resume.  There's no more to it than that.  I'm glad it backfired and he can rot on the vine in the swamp.

  • Looks like he is in the middle of a bad run at UCF.   He is on the verge of having three losing years in a row.

There is a HUGE difference in the overall quality of the American Athletic Conference and Conference USA right now. The AAC has a power rating and RPI that puts it at #8 in the nation. C-USA in those same measurements is way down at #22 or so.

So I would not knock Donnie Jones too much. He has to go up against SMU, Tulsa, UConn, Temple, Cincinnati, Houston and Memphis on a weekly basis. All teams that have RPI that would put them in as a C-USA Championship contender if they were in our league. In fact, UAB, Marshall and MTSU all would likely struggle to finish around 5th or 6th in the AAC this year.

    Just stating an obvious fact.

I wish Donnie and his family the best. He is a West Virginian and I want him to be successful. What went on here was not all his doing. He had a new Athletic Director come in and I am sure he did what he felt was best of him.

It wasn't anything I got, it was a question. If you wish he had stayed, I get why you would be upset at him.

Correct. Jones was betrayed first ,I don't blame him for leaving. Money that was promised for charter BB flights gone too.I like Hamrick, but he was taking care of football.

    Then we got Herrion.

DD is a  fun guy who can coach,I just hope he can get it done with recruiting.

I guess DJ should have stuck around, then, cause one of Herrion's last teams played at Villanova.

  • Other than one decent year with an NBA talent at center blocking everything shot within 8 feet of the basket, what has Donnie Jones ever done to show that he's even a mediocre basketball coach?  He had Tyler Wilkerson, Whiteside, and three good guards and he couldn't win one game in the CUSA tournament (blew a 12 point lead if I remember correctly).  He choked away nearly every big game at home.  I was kind of embarrassed he was our coach to be honest.

Pretty sure his all-time record is below .500.  He also blatantly got UCF in NCAA trouble.   I'd be shocked if he's UCF's coach next year.  He'll likely never get another D1 head coaching job.

I get that there are sour grapes, but I don't see a reasonable argument that he's even a decent coach, much less a good one.

***and back off the AAC is so much better than the old CUSA argument.  The current AAC is the old CUSA we were in minus the Calipari Memphis monster and plus UC, UConn, and a cheating SMU.  So it is tougher, but it's still far from the ACC.  There's no reason UCF couldn't raise its game like the other CUSA schools that did (I guess SMU and Houston).

  • Before tonight, UCF SOS was 150 and RPI 205.  Herd sos is 126 and RPI also 126.

So that tells you something about their wins and who they played OOC despite who they play in conf.
