Before we carried away here and start claiming that we are on the verge of being a perennial top 25 program, let's look at some facts re: some of our opponents and past conference brethren.
James Madison, a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, has had comparable recent success basketball wise to the Herd. A top CAA program with recent post season history, in a league currently led by UNC-Wilmington, a program headed by Kevin Keats, former MU assistant. Oh, and as an ODU play by play guy stated on Paul and Woody's weekday show, the CAA is undefeated this season against CUSA teams, including the 2 A$% whippins JMU put on the Herd. Oh, and in case you don't know it, Danny D. has indicated we will be playing JMU again next season, possibly home and home again. And they have almost all of their roster returning again next year.
MAC schools? I don't know about anybody else, but I'm getting about as peeved about losing games against Ohio U in basketball almost as much as I am with our football losses to the Bobkittens. Check their record this season; near the top of MAC East, will probably have 20+ wins and be in post season. Oh, yeah, most of team, including 6'10" 250 pound scoring center, Campbell, will be back next season when they appear in Huntington. Another MAC opponent, Akron, has had something like 10 straight 20+ winning seasons, and check our recent record against the Zips. Hopefully, DD will try to continue the series with them. Another recent MAC opponent, Kent, seems to year in and year out be successful on the hardwood, with ongoing winning seasons and post season appearances despite a series of coaching changes.
Bottom line, we could do a lot worse than playing these types of above named "regional" OOC opponents, both in terms of helping our overall strength of schedule and by providing competent and quality opponents who will play in Huntington. I mean, how many so called "power" opponents can anyone name who are eagerly lining up to sign home and home basketball contracts with MU??
