  • I  am aware that Jim Justice is running for Governor of West Virginia. I realize that this is a political item and may not be suitable for this board but, being that Jim has been and avid supporter of Herd athletics and Marshall is reason enough to waive those particulars. I also realize that most of the patrons of this sight are of the conservative variety, yet still have Marshall University in their thoughts and wishes, therefore it is in your best interest to lend your support.  Jim has done wonders for the Greenbrier and everything he becomes involved in usually improves. This is why I believe a progressive person like him would be good for the state.

  • ugh.

    Agree..

With that being said, I believe that this thread should be erased. I really don't want this place to become as political as Facebook has become.

  • I suspect Mr. Justice to be a blend of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, and all the good and bad that would entail.

  • While there is still a slight chance I’ll vote for Justice tomorrow, I’m strongly leaning towards Goodwin. Your argument doesn’t make much sense to me.

If I was truly convinced Justice was a strong Marshall guy that would almost guarantee I’d vote for him. However I have a home in Pendleton County and condo in Pocahontas County. Getting the local papers in both counties I’m very subjected to Greenbrier County news and the promotions from the Greenbrier Resort. The guy promotes WVU more than he does Marshall. So he loses on that issue in my book.  The past behavior shows he’s a supporter of both schools, but probably more of a WVU guy than a Marshall guy.

Second we had an extensive discussion on the guy’s business practices on this board some months ago. The general take away from the discussion on the board was Mr. Justice used his wealth and power to avoid paying less powerful people what they were due. He also fails to pay his taxes, again using his wealth and power to his advantage and the disadvantage of the rest of the population. I doubt such a long practice of abuse of power and authority is suddenly going to disappear by giving the guy more power and authority.

Finally I find his Jobs, Jobs, Jobs…promise to be misleading at best. In the winter I work part time at a ski resort. Over the last few years the resort has moved from hiring Americans to using various programs that allows them (legally) to bring in foreigners from all over the world. While they use several different programs one of the programs allows people from other countries to stay in America and work for a full year. I was talking with a Philippine woman who told me most of them were going to the Greenbrier when the ski resort closed for the season. So while Justice is talking about the jobs he creates at the Greenbrier, he isn’t talking about the fact he not only isn’t giving those jobs to West Virginians, he isn’t even giving them to Americans.

So no thank you. I won’t be voting for Jim Justice tomorrow.

wasbarryb, you better think twice regarding Goodwin if you have ANY CONCERN for MARSHALL.  He is from a political family in Jackson County who, like many, think that they are entitled through their lineage.  His Dad is a federal judge; his mom has been a political figure in state government going back to the (ugh) Jay Rockefeller administration.  She has been some kind of secretary of education or similar type of political plum job in both Tomblin and Manchin administrations.  She is very definitely ANTI MARSHALL and you check some of her actions/comments concerning MU when she was on the state higher ed governing board.  Some refer to the Goodwins as being "kingmakers" in the Democrat party, since they often have been known to give approval of certain candidates running on the Democratic ticket for statewide or even national offices.  Just an entitled family who have all made their careers living off the taxpayers in one way or another.  Booth is no damn different!!  A friend of Marshall he ain't and won't be as Governor!!

  • At the end of the day it's politics as usual and it's all the same. Just a different name and party affiliation. It's a scary day for the U.S.A. to know our suppose to be brightest are Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Pray for our country, because we need it more than ever!

  • If Jim Justice as reported is a billionaire 1 and 1/2 times and gives 5 mil to MU that is pocket change for him. Don't get me wrong it is very important to Marshall, but that is almost a slap in the face to ones alma mater. While we need not look a gift horse in the mouth let's not get carried away with his generosity, it is hardly overwhelming.

  • Considering Earl Ray and his Wife are supposed "Marshall people", I don't think being governor has helped MU a whole hell of a lot. Justice has some good and bad points. He is pandering to the coal vote knowing full well that industry is DEAD for the most part. Giving people false hope.
Goodwin seems like a decent guy. Cole is a business guy as well. The state is in a shambles budget wise. I would expect whoever gets in office to cut the budget even more and possibly re-establish the food tax and seriously increase the tobacco tax.
