  • MU get one run back so it's 3-1 after one inning.

  • Herd loads up the bases in the bottom of the second but could not score.  Still 3-1, USM.

  • Marshall leaves two on base in the third and still trail 3-1.  Captain Obvious here:  Need some key hits to get back in the game!

Man that stinks...  Worry about pitching and the defense doesn't hold up.

  • MU has men on 1st & 3rd with no outs in the fourth inning which brings a pitching change but alas the Herd can't score.  Still 3-1 going to the fifth.

  • Hammer comes on in relief in the top of the fifth to get out of a mild jam with no runs crossing the plate.

  • Ross comes in to relieve with two outs and two on and a 2-2 count on the batter who has fouled off a ton of pitches.  Jake Sandlin is at bat and he hit the grand slam that doomed the Herd on Thursday.  Ross strikes him out on the first pitch.  As Harry Carey would say, Let's get some runs!  Still 3-1 going to bottom of the sixth.

  • Herd strands a runner at 3rd.  Now going to the seventh inning and down 3-1.

  • 1st & 3rd for the Herd with no outs produces no runs for the Herd.  A base-running blunder caused one out and a double play got USM out of the inning with no damage.  Going to the eight still 3-1.

  • Herd gets a run and has runners on first and third with a pitching change.  Two outs in the eight and it's now 3-2.  Fly out ends the inning.  Going to the ninth at 3-2 USM leads.

Exactly, mu79grad.  MU has sadly pulled too many base running blunders at key times in games this year.  Steve Cotton said it was either a botched delayed steal, missed sign or something in the 7th inning. Had steal not been tried MU would have had NO outs when Ratliff hit into a double play; man on third would have scored, and we would be down 3-2, with 2 OUTS in bottom of 7th, instead of double play ending the inning.  Then when we scored in bottom of 8th, game would have been 3-3.

Wags needs to tell guys when season is on the line, you can't have key hitters taking called 3rd strikes.  Also, did not help that our clean up power hitter disappeared at KEY times in the tourney- - -4 strike outs today!!!  Hitting failed the Herd; pitching staff had a hell of a tourney.  OVERALL a GREAT SEASON for the HERD; post season does NOT appear possible, however!!

You never make the 1st out baserunning with 1st and 3rd no out. Unless, like you say, it was a missed sign on a delayed double steal.

These baseball idioms have been around for decades and decades and decades.
