    12. Huntington, West Virginia (Marshall): Didn’t I tell ya 14-12 was interchangeable. Drinking moonshine sounds like a blast. Watching couches getting burned however does not. Being drunk while burning couches just sounds like something terribly went wrong. And that’s what they do for fun here.

  • What a Maroon. Trying to sound like an authority on college football, but has no clue he is talking about WVU's couch burning tradition, and that he is making himself look like not so smart.

  • Basically he just went on market and city size. Sad to see he's never been to Huntington on a game day to appreciate the city. Personally I'd take Murfreesboro and Bowling Green over Houston, SA and El Paso any day.

  • I stopped at "14-12 was interchangeable" instead of "were interchangeable."  People hate grammar police, but nothing makes one sound uneducated or backward faster than grammar, especially in a supposed professional writer.

QuickStrike, didn't you really mean to say "What a Maroon", ala Bugs Bunny, since this Bozo has no clue that MU is NOT OVERRUN with a bunch of Pennsylvania and New Jersey Special Ed. rejects like the campus in Morganhole???

You are kidding, right? El Paso is a great place to play both football and basketball. There are tons of eating places around the university and the facilities are good. Houston is also a nice trip. I'm looking forward to our first trip to San Antonio. Riverwalk and the Alamo are must see places for me when we visit.

Have you actually visited (interchangeable with enjoyed) San Antonio?  This is one of the great tourist cities in the US.  One of the biggest disappointments in the NCAA was their decision to take San Antonio out of the NCAA Final Four rotation.  Ask virtually anyone in college sports and they will tell you that San Antonio is their absolute favorite city for the Final Four.

To compare it to Bowing Green or Murfreesboro is like comparing Kenova to Charleston, SC.

  • I like SA a lot. Great city.

BTW, I emailed the editor and he responded with a nice note saying he agreed the characterization of a few cities was out of line. That he asked the guy not to publish it but he did anyway and the author will be dealt with. Now whether that happens or not - but at least someone responded.

  • I tweeted the author of this article yesterday.

Basically said he had us confused with WVU, and that I saw he was an FAU alum. So I invited him to the game this season, offered to buy his ticket, and offered to let him tailgate with me and my family. I told him the Marshall fans would love to show him what Huntington was truly about, especially on game day.

    Here is his reply.......

"I appreciate the sincere offer. I know Huntington is not like Morgantown. I made a dumb joke to ruffle feathers and got more than I bargained for. The story wasn't supposed to run however communication broke down between the site manager and myself.

I apologize if the statement offended you. It was an honest mistake and a silly joke at best.

As for the potential to tailgate If I'm able to make it to the game this year I'll be sure to remember this and follow up on the offer lol

Unfortunately the ripple effect of his joke could harm the cities reputation that they've been working tirelessly to restore and promote. Not to mention one of the most hospitable fan bases in college football. A lot of eyeballs read these articles and could deter opposing fans that haven't made a trip to Huntington before from visiting.

  • DShoe and Herdmeister it's just more preference. Yes I've been to San Antonio it's nice. I'm not saying either I'd take a vacation to Bowling Green but does have some good sentimental values to me. That's where I'd always stop going to Nashville from Huntington or Columbus. I'll more than likely end up moving in the Murfreesboro area before its all said and done due to more stuff headquartered in Central TN. So I'd still take both just based off the value they hold to me

Scotty, to be fair, Bowling Green makes many lists of "great places to retire to".

H-ton & MU have great possibilities in the medium term, if and only if the city can have continued forward looking leadership AND the legislature quits slowly strangling higher education...recruiting & retaining science & engineering faculty will become very difficult if the current environment persists.
In memory of Dr Daniel P Babb who taught so much to so many.

  • Glad they took it down.

Does anyone remember if Bowling Green was dead last?  In my book it would have to be because WKU is there.

Spot on, elginherd.  Especially re: legislature and higher ed.  Mandatory question that should be asked of ALL legislative candidates in Cabell-Wayne this fall:  Do you support the planned growth of MU, including campus facilities and enrollment, as envisioned in its approved master plan, including granting the school sufficient bonding power to upgrade and renovate its physical plant to 21st Century standards?  Any candidate who answers "No" or even hesitates certainly DOES NOT have the best interest of MU or the area in mind!!  MU drastically needs major $$$$$ to renovate deteriorating existing facilities and build new ones in order to attract the out of state and foreign students, as well as more in state students, needed to reaching its eventual goal of approaching 20,000 in enrollment.  When you realize that MU's total budget is only about  A THIRD of a school like Eastern Kentucky U., which is slightly larger, about 16,000 enrollment, and has NO medical, pharmacy, etc., programs like MU, then you realize just how many obstacles need to be overcome for MU to significantly grow and be a major catalyst in turning around the Huntington and area economies!!
