He doesn’t care for the graduate transfer rule, but Marshall coach Doc Holliday knows he has to play the game, too.

You know the drill: If you earn your degree from School A and have eligibility remaining, you can transfer to School B for your final season (in some cases, two) without sitting out a year. - See more at: http://www.wvgazettemail.com/sports-doug-smock/20160814/doug-smock-how-will-graduate-transfers-impact-herd#sthash.5IAM2ZQM.dpuf

Former Michigan Wolverine Terry Richardson is the Herd's grad transfer vying for a starting spot/playing time in the secondary.

  • Interesting that Doc doesn't like the Grad transfer rule, but regularly recruits NQs.

    For example.
Player X is recruited heavily by Doc while in HS, but Player decides to play football at P5 School X.
After 3 seasons of little or no playing time at P5 School X....Player X uses the Grad transfer rule to transfer to MU to play his last year for Doc.
Sounds like a good thing for MU.

As far as backup QBs leaving.....that is on Doc to keep QBs happy with playing time.

also, player y could play 3 years here and then transfer to p5.

so, doc should rotate qbs just to keep them all happy? seriously?

Yes....our players can Grad transfer also.  Works both ways.

Did I say Doc should rotate all QBs?  He's lost Froh & Birdsong recently.  If Doc wants a backup QB to stay he needs to find a way to make the guy happy, or face the possibility the player may leave.  Simple as that.

you said, "that is on Doc to keep QBs happy with playing time." so, yes, yes you did imply he should rotate qbs. i just don't get how it's doc's fault. doc's job isn't to keep kids happy, doc's job is to win football games, period.

Doc has lost experienced backup QBs Froh, Holcombe & Birdsong recently.

In Smock's Grad transfer article Doc complains about losing backup QBs.

It is on Doc to keep backup QBs happy, if he is unhappy about them transferring out....therefore to a certain extent it is Doc's fault.

You don't have to rotate all QBs to keep the primary backup happy.  Doc needs to find a coaching philosophy that keeps his primary backup QB in the fold.

  • Perhaps he should kneecap the starting QB once in a while so the backup gets the playing time he deserves by being second best.   ::)

  • All three QB situations were different: 1--Fro realized that he'd only get one year as a starter, so he left for PT and an MBA; 2--Gunnar realized that he'd never start for Doc and took a step down; 3--Birdsong had already accepted a redshirt as the supposed "anointed one'', then got bypassed by CL due to injury--he understood that he'd only play as a backup/injury replacement and possibly as a third down change-of-pace, so he too dropped to FCS...we've generally lost one QB per year (like Anderson and Garvin), but this year's unusual circumstances led to more departures...I trust that Doc will have the situation under control come September...

  • I think the graduate transfer rule is great because it is additional motivation for the kids to graduate.  The more degrees some of these kids can earn the better it is for them. The rule favors the kids and not the schools.  That's why the coaches are upset.

This year will be different also.  Brand new backup QB that has no experience at the college level.  Sounds like Xavier Gaines is the front runner at the moment.  Hopefully, Chase stays healthy, and we have some big enough leads this year to get the backup QB some PT to help him develop in case he is needed.

Silly. First, birdsong leaving is a plus for us. He was turrrrrible. Froh left, and he should have left. He was starting talent behind an all timer at MU. Nothing you can do.

A backup that is very talented, will leave if he cant start. And thats a good problem to have because that means you got a hell of a QB.

My Herd brother, I have to respectfully disagree with you. Birdsong led us on a great comeback victory against Purdue. I'll never forget Birdsong's contribution to Marshall and I'll forever be grateful! I wish Birdsong the best!

Not only the Purdue victory, but those key first downs Birdsong picked up helped preserve the Bowl victory against UConn.

Reminds me of a Bob Pruett quote when asked about playing time and keeping players happy - "It's not my job to keep him happy, its his job to keep me happy."

That is a great quote by Coach Pruett and very true.

However, as a coach you can't make a backup QB unhappy about playing time, and then complain if he transfers out to find more playing time.  You need to find some times to ensure you get the guy in there, especially if you want him prepared in case QB1 goes down with injury.

  • when?

If pretty sure you know when.  Like in the 4th quarter when you have huge leads.  At least 6 games last season that the backup QB could have gotten playing time.  If a guy is not happy after that then he should just leave, and Doc shouldn't complain if he leaves.  Looks like the key is finding an adequate backup QB who appreciates the role, and that you can count on to stay with the team.

or we could've gotten a true freshman, who we were counting on to possibly win a title that year, more experience?

E-Man, getting scary. Agree 100% with your comments......

Birdsong gave what he had, it worked while healthy, but with the injury Chase stepped in and took charge.

Once Littons redshirt was burnt, really had to have him learn as much as possible, as fast as possible.

Birdsong knew little or no playing time for him next year....

Thanks to Birdsong for the effort and contributions.....
