  • Coach D said after the game that he told the team to take it to the hole. He said they knew Morehead was aggressive and fouled a lot. Smart coaching by Danny.

  • Browning had 32. Played great

Even better. I remember lots of people trashing DD for bringing him cause he was just a D2 kid.

I watched him multiple times his FR and SO years at Fairmont and I knew he was going to be good.

  • These WV kids can't play. We need to go out of state and get players. Elmore, Browning and Burks are horrible. ;)

  • This was a good quality win tonight! It feels good to finally beat these guys. Morehead's not that big, but they are one of the quickest, hardest-playing teams we'll see. Marshall fans can feel good about this win.

Morehead St. had no answer for Penava in the first half, as he made 9 FTs! I'm excited for him; he just needs to get stronger.

Stevie was awesome tonight hitting shots everywhere.

Morehead's coach, in post game, said Marshall's guards outplayed his guards and that doesn't happen very often.

Speaking of WV kids, Bledsoe got in tonight for a few minutes but they were quality minutes. Played just four minutes but had a couple rebounds and 2 points both from the foul line in that span.

  • We were lucky to win this game tonight. Great win, but 36 freethrows to 6, isnt going to happen very often. And even less often are we going to make so many of them. We have to get better on the boards, which is going to be hard, being so undersized.

Good one to put in the win column. Pretty good chance to be undefeated going into OSU. Man, that would be a treat to go upset those butt holes.

  • I agree that I don't think we don't get such a FT disparity in most games.

I do think we will make around this percentage of FTs for most games though. All of our guys are shooters and I think we will be an excellent FT shooting team because of that.

Agree that we have to do a better job on the boards.

Which I think is possible. I watched them against NC Central and they'll have a size advantage on us but they didn't seem very athletic. Looked slow.

  • 60-56 with 11:34 to go.

Marshall is now in the bonus.

I found a link online, but its one of the pirated sites. The site has our game on the Coastal feed and the Coastal game on our feed, so the link is correct.

    http://www.feed4u.me/watch/1783234/1/Coppin-State-vs-Coastal-Carolina.html

They had the CC game on our link. Wish I had made the connection that the links could have been switched.

I wanted to go to the game but had to work late.

  • The foul discrepancy was completely legitimate. Morehead held and hacked every time we went to the basket.
It may have been legit, but you don't think Herd fans would have bitched if foul stats and associated FTs were reversed?

  • As good as Steve Cotton is at calling radio PxP for FB, he is even better at basketball.  What a gift for us & MU.

Baseball is Steve's best sport and he will tell you that. Basketball and football are 2 and 3 in that order.
As a former broadcaster myself I can tell you basketball is far and away the easiest sport to call. Baseball is the toughest.

  • Peneva shows good athleticism for big man but better learn to go strong.  Such a pus

Believe me, Danny is constantly on Adjin and Aleksa to take it strong to the hoop. Danny has told us that European's have a "finesse" mindset and it is tough to change. He said he can name countless NBA Euro's that do the same. Look at Aleksa's rebuilt body. There is no reason he doesn't dominate offensively inside but just can't get it in his mind to do so. I tell he and Adjin all the time to treat the rim like they hate it and beat the heck out if it.

  • The free throw disparity was just good scouting by the Marshall staff. Marshall shot 36, but in Morehead's previous game on Saturday, Lipscomb shot 42 free throws. And that was at Morehead using Morehead's refs. Two of there refs on the floor in Huntington last night have worked Final Fours, so the Eagles really have nothing to complain about.

  • Speaking of free throw disparity, it could have been worse.

Does anyone remember our game with MSU in 2013? Morehead shot 65 free throws, making 40 of them. The two teams combined for 108 total free throws. I don't have the number that the Herd made, but if I recall, we weren't so great at free throws in 2013.   A 108 free throws...that's unreal.

Agree, but one other thing concerned me.  We got a little careless/sloppy in our floor play down the stretch.  Could have easily pushed the lead to a good double digit margin, but errant passes and other TOs, less than crisp passes, kept MSU in it.  Ryan Taylor at 6'5", 249#, is certainly NOT the quickest guy on the floor when handling the ball out front.  As noted, this was a QUICK MSU team- - -our players, especially "bigs" have to be aware of the back slap, etc., quick reach ins, from opposing guards when handling the ball outside.  Other than that, pretty solid game overall.

I was there.  They got all of theirs in the second half.  That was the year they decided to tighten refereeing and start calling handchecks and what not.  Their coach figured out that if they drove to the basket every possession they were coming out with a basket or foulshot.  Herrion did not figure this out and we blew a commanding lead at half and ended up in major foul trouble early in the second half.  All he had to do was maintain the same strategy but he never saw it, and we would have coasted to an easy win.  Just an awful game manager.

It was after that game that I posted that Herrion was just not going to be able to get the job done as HC. Mutterings in Herddom reached a crescendo a few weeks later, leading Herrion to declare it was a "cloud of negativity", LOL.

  • Maybe I got the wrong impression from the TV set, but during his last conference tournament it looked like Herrion yelled out in disgust to the popular Dagoberto Pena after an opponent had just nailed a late, particularly damaging trey to the interests of the Herd. Poor Pena looked like he had gained weight to me, in any case he either had no interest or ability/quickness to play much defense at that stage of his waning MU career.

Maybe I don't have it right, but it looked like Pena wanted to charge Little Tom for that call-out and had to be restrained by teammates. Respect for Herrion had apparently reached such a low. Hamerick eventually had no choice but to pull the plug on Herrion.

We are lucky to have DD, and I expect his teaching and attention to detail will win us a lot of close games soon.

As most on here know, I miss very few practices. Some of the guys I sit with have been watching Herd practice for 25 years. They all tell me that that have NEVER seen any coach do so much teaching at Danny. It is obvious that he LOVES to teach basketball. Particularly defense.

I’m soooooo glad we avoided hiring a High School coach that lacked college experience and went with…Oh wait, never mind.
