"Too many people are thinking of security instead of opportunity; they seem more afraid of life than of death"  – James F. Byrnes

Government is the most dangerous institution known to man. Throughout history it has violated the rights of men more than any individual or group of individuals could do: it has killed people, enslaved them, sent them to forced labor and concentration camps, and regularly robbed and pillaged them of the fruits of their expended labor. ~ JOHN HOSPERS

  • Looks like we may have some depth at DT now that some players have added some weight.  There are at least 6 DTs at 270# or better now.  Heater could actually get 4 very tall D-linemen in there at the same time if it might disrupt the other team's passing game.  Not a Senior among them.

    #91 Ryan Bee  6-7  280  RSJr
    #51 Malik Thompson  6-6  295  RSJr
    #54 Nyquan Harris  6-2  300  RSJr
    #99  Jason Smith  6-3  280  RSJr
    #69 Aaron Dopson  6-4  280  RSSo
    #93  Larry Aaron  6-5  275  RSFr
    #94 Channing Hames  6-5  260  RSSo
    #98 Charkie Johnson  6-5  260  RSSo

Johnson is a DE, but add walk on Maddox as a DT to this list. I'm surprised Wane is listed as an OL, as his video at DT is impressive and he's huge

We might be OK at DT after all, as these guys have bulked up for the trenches, although wish Hames was 10-20 pounds bigger

    Go Herd!

Wasn't sure if Johnson & Hames were DTs or DEs.  Also, wasn't sure about Maddox in the mix at DT.  Heater needs to stick 6-3 340# OL Wale Layeni in at Nose Tackle on certain short yardage downs. LOL

  • Hopefully they are strong, quick, and can play with leverage.

Cb depth looks shaky.  Guys are small and if they can't run 4.4 yikes!  Jackson, Hunter and Clay have size but the rest.........

TE depth is very shaky behind Yurachek.  Little to no game experience.

S - need more depth - Gant, Reavis - depth has little game experience - George, Gant, Drayton (need game experience)

OL- depth has little to no game experience

LB, DT, WR, ST, RB, QB depth all look better

Our defense and kicking game will be the most improved part of our team this year.  Offensive improvement will be determined by our scheme, playcalling, and o-line.

    Prediction

Offense we avg. - 28-32ppg / Litton or a RB avg. a TD better this year a game / OL shows slight improvement through starters experience
Defense we avg. - 22-25ppg / Better against the run and better qb pressure / Secondary will still surrender big plays
Overall - an improved win total from last season with leadership needing to be strong to right the tough stretch.  Herd has to protect the home-field advantage for a Bowl season.

Expect a lot of toss up games.  Herd does well against running and poor passing qb's this year.  Good passers and unpredictable playcalling teams with speed and size at WR and TE will be our struggle.

I like him better at NT also.  Put a red shirt on him to give him the extra year in the S&C program and we have a big NT for the next 4 years.  He steps right in when Nyquan Harris leaves after next season.  Plenty of other players to play OL.

Football in MOCO is putting out some good ones right now.  The kid Enoch Owumi (class of 2017) the Herd should try to get in now and NQ.  He ran 10.5 FAT in the 100m this year at MD States and is a PQ.  Easily be the fastest kid on the team.  Can play wr, s, cb.  Played at Montg. Blair.  Would be a partial qualifier.  Flying way under the radar!

Why do we continue to have depth issues?

  • Just some thoughts, I counted around 25 upper class contributors (with Artis Johnson and Juwon Young) on the roster.

-4 OL are JRs and above. Levi Brown and Locklear will probably occupy 2 of the 5 spots though.
-of those 25, 3 are our RB combination.
    -2 are the kickers.

    Outside of those numbers

WR and TE is a lot of question marks. Love Cody Mitchell though.

Everything else looks same as last year. Hopefully we make that jump. If not it is going to be a long year.

Good news is that there are no Srs on that list

Not only no Seniors in this group, but some in this group can add even more bulk before the 2018 season.  Going to lose 4 Seniors in that group after the 2018 season.  Good thing is there are 4 other underclassmen who can have the size to step in as replacements.  It has been awhile since DT play has been a strength, but I'm seeing some potential here.

Would love to see the Herd staff start to emphasize recruiting in the Metro DC area, including MD and No. VA, like we use to in the past!!

QS, man I hope our special teams' coach plans on using some of these tall dudes on all extra point and FG tries by our opponents.  And doesn't forget to have them raise their arms and time their jumps.

  • Maybe I missed something.....Damien Dozier still on the roster?  Wasn't he shot in an "alleged" drug dust up?  If so, I thought he would have been dismissed.  I hope he wasn't mixed up in something that would get him dismissed.
