  • Two of his best throws of the day were on "free plays" where the defense had jumped.  He was relaxed because he knew he had nothing to lose.  Is he pressing too much?

  • Something I noticed about Chase yesterday that really impressed me.  Twice he helped Anderson with a shoe problem he was having on the field.  Chase has been showing some real leadership this season.

  • He's a rhythm passer.  Needs to be set up in a groove early.  When the playcalls are not mixed up on 1st down and we run the ball every 1st down of each series he can't find it.  He's effective with rolls, playaction, moving the pocket.  When we make it obvious passing downs he struggles and so does our offense.

  • Chase still isn't over that hit. You can see it at times how he releases the ball too quickly and in other situations. Not knocking the kid, but he is still afraid of taking a hit. And I think that is his biggest problem with his accuracy sometimes.

He's scrambled and taken the option, often without sliding more in 6 games than he has the previous 2 seasons. How is he not over that hit??

  • The one thing I noticed that is during read-option plays...  he never takes off and runs even though the defensive ends crash down...  It is like our opponents know that he is not going to run.  They don't even honor it, it hurts our backs and puts them in tough spots.

On a positive note, when in rhythm, he does throw a nice ball in some tight spots...

  • I think he threw one of the TDs yesterday the next play after taking a shot.

He took a big shot on the throw to Brady and underthrew him, saw the shot coming and didn't step into it. The very next play, we run the same thing and Litton has a guy bearing down on him again, this time steps into it while taking a shot, still underthrew it a tad but this time stepping into it just enough to get it there for the Brady TD. He still missed some throws yesterday, some easy ones honestly. But, the kid has shown some toughness and leadership this year. He's taking care of the football 13 TDs to 3INTs and while the offense needs to finish drives a little better with the defense we have if Chase can continue to protect the ball and clean up just a couple of things we will be fine.

Great post! I think we are all guilty of thinking or expecting Litton to be on the same level as our other great quarterbacks. Maybe our expectations of him were too high? I know I was down on him when he threw some bad passes in the first half. He had a excellent second half.  We all seem to post ( in both football and basketball) how the next recruit is going to be our next pro player. Nothing wrong in being a good journeyman QB. Todd Donnan was not the quarterback that Micheal Payton was, but he won games. Maybe Litton is another Toddd Donnan and I would be very happy with those results.

Not sure what you're seeing?  On the TD to Brady, ODU blitzed the safety to that side. Knowing the blitzer wouldn't be accounted for, Litton held the ball until the last possible second allowing Brady to get open and made a pretty decent throw knowing he was going to take a shot for it. That was a play AFTER just taking a pretty decent hit.  His mechanics are still not great, but it's not because he's afraid of taking a hit.

  • Didn't say he was terrified. I just see at times he gets a little antsy and doesn't read the whole field and steps into his throws. I see what I see. He's having a decent year but in no way is he stacking up to what we had become accustomed to thru the years. But hopefully he will get there. Also when you have receivers that have beat their defender by 2 steps you HAVE to make them pay and not over or under throw 30-40% of the time. He is in his 3rd year and should be making those throws on a consistant basis.

  • I don't understand how a guy that can throw the perfect lasers he can will at times also throw that almost sidearm with that little quick-toss 'sissified' motion off his back foot that rarely ends up in the same time zone as his intended receiver not that far away.

Note that at 6'3 230 or so I am not at all saying he is a sissy - he could obviously toss me through walls like the guy in the BR of the first Terminator movie. It's just that the pro scouts will dismiss him if doesn't clean up his technique, they just can't  have that.

Obviously he does that because it gets the ball out faster than he otherwise knows how to - but it is hurting his team.

Chase throwing off his back foot is the problem with his accuracy

  • I do not buy for one minute that Chase is afraid of contact. Now as far as "passive" contact, heck no one wants to be in the pocket and get their teeth knocked loose from the blind side. On the other hand there is " aggressive" contact as in keeping the ball on the zone read at 6'6 240  he's not absorbing the hit, he ' initiating the hit which is a big difference. If Chase could run 3-5 times a game the RBs would have longer runs from the line., receivers are more open, Chase grows faster as a leader, and then we can see just how good our D can be if given an early lead. Just 3-5 carries a game it can all start at MTSU.

  • Or put in an offense that best fits him.  Then he can learn the pocket like Tom Brady.

  • The point is we are NOT going to change the offense, over 8 years we know this. Chase can run what we are doing now. Froehnapel  "exposed" what can happen when the QB keeps the ball every now and then and then we shut it down to the point that he left, and that's plain ridiculous. I'm callin BS. Chase can freeze the defense for a split second to open running lanes and open up recievers by keepin the ball a few times. That is a fact. So until someone explains why "Chase keeping the ball every now and then" will not work, all this other talk is a false narrative.

  • I think he threw one of the TDs yesterday the next play after taking a shot.

He did.  They ran the play to Brady twice in a row.  He got popped hard on the first one he underthrew, then they did it again and he put it in there perfect and Brady had a little more separation, TD!  Chase got hit hard on the second one, too.

I think Chase quarterbacks like I golf.  Moments of brilliance and moments of having my head completely up my ass, sprinkled in with going through the motions.  But I also believe he's found a way to relate to his teammates and has become a leader.  He's yet to have that total breakout game (total game, as in 4 quarters), but I think it's coming.  Better chance than me shooting par, anyway.
