  • I'm kind of iffy on John Brannen. I know he had success at Northern Kentucky and, when they were on TV, I enjoyed watching them. But, the Cincinnati situation leaves me a little uncomfortable having him as Marshall's next coach.

Won't comment on any future basketball positions for Brannen, whether at MU or elsewhere.  Am glad to see a MU alum and former player walk away financially sound and not having to worry about where his next meal will come from.

As for UC, particularly its basketball program, everyone just needs to remember that they have had various "issues" there over many decades.  Recall that Bobby Huggins was run out of town there mainly over some academic issues/irregularities within the program.

  • Except Mike, Dan, and Kathy D'Antoni are the de-facto athletic directors currently at Marshall. Nice try, though.

  • If the coaching position opens, just remember we once hired a coach with a lot of baggage; Sonny. We have a history of giving players a second chance, why not hire Brannen if he is the best candidate?

  • I know John personally. He is a good person. I don?t know the ins and outs of the Cinci situation. And I don?t know if he would want to come to H-town or not. But I?d love to have him back. He?s a good coach.

  • https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/university-of-cincinnati/2022/09/09/report-uc-agrees-to-pay-former-bearcats-coach-john-brannen-2-75m/68188177007/

The below quotation is from the above link.
"The University of Dayton announced Tuesday that Brannen will serve as a program analyst and senior special assistant to Flyers men's basketball coach Anthony Grant. Grant was an assistant at Marshall under then-head coach Billy Donovan from 1994-96. Brannen played for Marshall from 1995-97 after transferring from Morehead State."

It appears that Grant is helping Brannen to regain his coaching career. I doubt if Grant would take a chance on Brannen if all the UC allegations were true? There are always two sides to every story.

  • Whenever we do get a new coach I won?t be surprised if it?s not Capel sadly. He hasn?t done much anywhere he has been but keeps getting high level jobs. Maybe he could do it at a midmajor?

I said the same thing when Spears was hired . Look for someone Spears is familiar with and has been around , unfortunately , thats Capel. ADs always seem to hire their buddies .

People can say what they want about Billy D., and yes, he didn't stay around long enough to finish a large cup of coffee.  But, in retrospect, you can't say that his staff/assistants were just "chopped liver".  Grant, Brannen, turned out to be solid basketball coaches over their careers.
