  • "The wide receiver group as a whole has been revamped from last year, and the Herd needed it. New weapons in a new offensive system give the Thundering Herd plenty of weapons to work with but Christian Fitzpatrick (Michigan State) is by far the most intriguing prospect. Marshall hasn?t had a downfield threat in several years, but have worked mostly out of the slot position. Fitzpatrick?s combination of size and strength gives the Herd quarterbacks a new, exciting threat. He flashed some of that in the spring game.

  • sure would be great if he was writing about an exciting QB transfer.  maybe one of the QBs who will be on roster by fall practice will show up for the Herd version of the airy raidy thingy.  anyway, thanks for the effort, i guess.  glad to have a WR who might make a difference but it reminds me of the old saying- don't put the ____ before the _____.

yep, you'd think with 99+ players on a team x 4, we'd have at least a QB.  to be fair, Huff did come in at a bad time in the CFB world although he inherited a pretty good D.  don't know when or if we'll see another offense with all the pieces necessary at the same time

Look I'm no Doc supporter but Huff brought this on himself

Went the quick route to get a "big" job and he screwed himself and us in the process

    Terrible hire

I agree.  Huff may have came at a bad time, but so did every other HC in FBS.  Huff is no different in this respect than the 134 other FBS head coaches.  All HC and programs are going through the same thing at the same time.  Some HC have excelled, some have fallen, but all have struggled to figure out the best strategy in the new environment.  Definitely an evolution.  Survival of the fittest rules apply.  Those HCs who do not have a good strategy fail to adapt and overcome, then get eaten alive.

Huff still has time to prove he is smarter than the average HC and his strategy is the right strategy.

  • Fitzpatrick is going to be the guy that intrigues people the most of the new coming WRs because he's big, looks like a million bucks, and played for a p5 school previously. But, the WR I'm most excited about for this coming season is the Metcalf kid who transferred from Middle Tennessee.

He's smaller at only 5-9, 170lbs but he was very productive for the Blue Raiders, proving he can already be an asset at our level of college football. Had over 50 catches and 650 yards last year. Both numbers would have easily led our team.

  • Who was the smallish but fast WR transfer we got from the Penn State coaching depravity exodus a few years ago ? Got behind the VT defense for a long gain for us, as we eventually lost in OT.

  • Well first off, Huff addressed the issue that Fancher could throw a decent pass on 3rd down every so often and it would get dropped.

In the Air raid you have to have good route runners with hands and I think the coaching staff tried to address that situation.

They also thought they?d have an experienced Fancher and then that fell through, then thought they?d have an experienced Griftis then that flew through.  They brought in Braxton B and he looks like a TJ McMahon situation.

It?s not like the staff aren?t trying.  There?s no reason one of QBs on the roster can?t pass the ball and run the offense.  These kids have been preparing to play QB in college since the age of 6-7.

My thoughts are if you are a QB on the bench.  You get one year to develop, learn the offense, strengthen your body and get your timing down with WRs (QBs and WRs practice together independently of the team all year).

After that year if you cant go in and run the offense and complete 50% (against a team that is equal to us) the kid needs to either switch positions, transfer to whomever will take them or go on academic scholarship.

We wouldnt keep a linebacker that missed 5 tackles, every game.  Why should we keep a QB that cant go 20/40, that?s just dead weight and not a good use of a scholarship.

In the new G5 world our experience has been, you have to bring 4 QBs to find one and you need at least 2 kids good enough to play at all times and sometimes 3 that can play.

  • Seems like we used to have a starter, a backup, and someone redshirted for QBs.  But they all were players and ready to go when needed.  Now we have 10 levels of QB and none of them are ready to go, ever.

  • Fancher had flashes but just wasn't consistent.  It will be interesting to see how he does at FAU in front of 10 fans a game.  The fact that we lost him seemed to really hit Huff hard.

Was losing Fancher so hard in Huff because he didn't believe we had anyone capable ready to play?  I am hoping Pennington has a breakout year..not because of his name, just because we need a solid QB this year.

  • If Huff was high on Fancher as a QB it says to much about his judgment, for the umpteeth time, Fancher was a mediocre high school quarterback.

If Huff would have appointed a decent OC and QB coach to help develop him, Fancher may still be here. Trickett may be one of the worst assistant coach hires in MU football history. Right up there with Rippon as our DC during Docs time.

He had some fun plays to watch and was creative.  I just think he didn't either emphasize the fundamentals or didn't have the horses to consistently make plays.  He was definitely a scapegoat, imo, for our offensive woes.  I mean we put up good numbers on offense until Fancher got hurt, last year.  First time beating ECU @ ECU, first time beating VT in FBS.  Very close game at NCState, more on the defense was that loss than the offense.  40+ points should have done the trick.  The lack of a consistent, healthy QB in a decade has been more of a downfall than who was calling the plays.  Cramsey seemed to have no problem at Memphis.

We seem to build a team and then find a QB to plug into it.  We need to find a good QB and then build a team and playbook around him.
