  • The board also approved a capital project program statement for aviation buildings and a 30-year lease agreement with Yeager Airport. The lease agreement involves construction of a classroom building, hangars and parking at the airport for Marshall’s new flight school. The airport’s board approved the tentative agreement yesterday.

    Other board action included the following:

        Approval of a new Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Until now, the university has offered an engineering degree with an emphasis on civil engineering. Officials believe the change will help with marketing of the program;

    I find the engineering program very interesting;  I think that it will change the perception of MU and will help to attract students to MU. I remember when I started MU in the late 1960's MU had a engineering "program" and the classes were held in old building on 20th Street that had previously been a meat market. The location was where the current Physical Maintenance building is located. MU gave up the engineering degree. Now MU is now offering undergraduate and master degrees in engineering in such fields as electrical; civil; mechanical;  biomedical and computer science. Take a look at the below link.

  • FT2, prior to the mid 60s, MU's engineering department was housed in the "temporary" wooden firetrap call Old Main Annex, located on part of the land where Smith Hall now sits.  Was amazing that with the lack of adequate facilities and sufficient support for decades how Marshall's Engineering has persevered and grown, and turned out as many good Engineers as it has.  Have to believe that it will now continue, with modern facilities, to grow in size and stature as time goes by!

  • The engineering program was ended in the early 1970's and restarted in 2006. Marshall didn't have the resources or facility to support the program and that was the reason that was given to end it. It was a poor decision to end the program. MU should have raised private money to develop the program. JMHO.

    "In 2006, Marshall University revived its four-year engineering program, which had been shuttered in the early 1970s."

  • I lived through and graduated with a BES degree in Machine Design Engineering (Mechanical) from Marshall.
    My first year was in the old wooden barracks on 3rd Avenue 1965-66.  The next year we moved to the 20th Street location, which was the previous location of Brumfield’s meat market.  It was next to
    the Maintenance Facilities Building (across an east/west street to the south) and the church was at the corner of 5th Ave & 20th St.

    The MU Engineering Program was very good back then and a good MU Engineering friend of mine once said that he hired engineers and fired engineers and that he would put a Marshall Engineer up against any other engineer and they would stack up well with them.

    Why the program was discontinued in the early 1070’s?
    Politics.
    In the late ‘60s, MU was getting their 2 programs certified, the Civil program had gotten their program a temporary BSCE status, and were working on the Mechanical program.  That raised eyebrows up in “the ‘hole” so, presto change-o, magically the WV legislature decided to defund the MU Engineering Program.

    I graduated in 1970 and got my degree before the shutdown and proud to say I am a Marshall Engineer.

    Its amazing how much Marshall has accomplished in spite of almost constant opposition from that school up north.

    That opposition has remained consistent, Marshallmark, and unrelenting.  If anything, it has only grown more devious and insidious under a certain school's president, a self serving, bow tied "blowhard" who speaks with a "forked tongue", as our Native American brothers have often said!!!
