  • Here is a sensible article.  The author makes the point that the NCAA should have tried to play conference only games this year with the goal of having a NCAA Tournament.  He admits that even what he is proposing is dicey.

the problem is once you get to the postseason, when you start disqualifying teams for a positive test for a virus with a .075% mortality rate -- the super majority of which are 50 yrs older than these BB players, the postseason turns into a joke.  you're seeing it right now with WV HS FB.  how can anyone say they're the "true" AAA champs when martinsburg & SV weren't allowed to participate?  it's a joke.  just let the teams play their reg season for conference supremacy & help fund the athletic depts, & call it a day.  they proved last yr NCAAB can afford to not have a tournament.  if they're gonna play virus games again this yr, then let's skip it again.  nobody will respect that you won the NCAA tournament if you win half your games by forfeit or 2/3 of the top 25 weren't allowed to play.

Sure, this spring all the talking heads will be talking about this and say exactly what you are saying.  But if Marshall gets to the Final Four in part due to a couple of COVID forfeits, I can tell you right now that Herd fans will be talking about how 2020-21 was an amazing season for decades and we'll hang a big banner in the the CAM.  Is anybody on here apologizing about our high football ranking is, since we only got a jump start because App State was ranked because only half the teams were playing and then when we beat them we jumped in because only half the teams were playing?  No, we are all happy about it and quite prepared to say why we deserve it.

Same thing will happen in basketball.  The winners will cheer and the losers will complain.  And in five years no one will care.

  • I think there's a less than 50% chance that basketball plays more games than football this season.

Maybe. But I think there may be a lot of new teams pop up. Cancelled game offers a team to find another team to play. Teams will want to play games. We may get games we normally wouldn’t get with all this.

  • Every viral expert in the country has been talking about this virus spiking in the November-February timeframe for the last 8 months.  The TBT and NBA showed us how basketball bubbles work.  I think the collective group of conferences and administers have significantly failed here.

The foreseeable and correct way forward here would have been a series of bubbles.  Form regional bubbles of 8 teams and play some round robin OOC.  Form a bubble and do conference games and tournament.  Form a bubble and do the NCAA Tournament.  There was talk of this, and it never got done.

I just don't see how college basketball is going to pull this off with the way its been implemented.

  • Another approach would be to use common sense and realize 80% of the world is going to get this just like a Harvard professor wrote back in March and not to over react.  None of these college kids have had any hospitalization from covid and especially the tracing making players sit out.

I hope people are not minions and not allow the vast over reaction to this virus.  There will never be a cure as this will always be around just like the flu.

If this continues basketball will be cancelled.

And a better opponent. This is what I have as saying about doing horse trading and may get better opponents. People are going to want to play games.

  • Hamrick needs to be aggressive and watching games that are cancelled and contacting the other team to at least play 20 games this year if possible...

It’s possible we could pick up some nice games if they play the cards right and we can stay covid free.
