  • As I mentioned on this board a few months ago, it is now confirmed that the MU-ECU game scheduled for 2025 has been cancelled.  I understand that it was Marshall who cancelled this contract.  It just doesn't make any sense to me why Marshall would cancel this game.  From the MU Thundering Blog:  https://twitter.com/MarshallTBlog/status/1734358096141512967

  • I really enjoy playing ECU.  If we cancelled without having to, then Spears clearly does not understand the Marshall fanbase.

ECU cancelled it. They also cancelled a home game with Boise. Their program is a wreck, going soft for their new staff and trying to rack up wins.

Thought I read over on the Sun Belt BBS board that the Boise series was cancelled and will be replaced with a series with Coastal.

I have it on very good authority that Spears cancelled.  However, I sincerely doubt the truth will ever be know.

Not saying that wouldn't be the case but why would we cancel a winnable home game that would likely draw a very nice crowd? Doesn't seem logical. Unless, Spears has something working with a P5.

  • Any chance ECU will be joining Sunbelt and this change will be offset with conference game?
Strategy without action is only a dream.

  • When we were getting ready to play ECU I listened to some of their podcasts and I know for a fact ECU focus for scheduling in the very near future is all in State Schools, UNC, NC State, App State, Elon, Garden-Webb, Wake Forrest, et cetera.  For a couple reasons, travel with the teams is cheap and easy, travel for their fans is easy and they saw that they could be a .500 team and one of the NC school shows up and they have a near sell out.

I don't know if this has anything to do with our game being canceled.

I agree, it doesn't make sense for MU to back out of this game. I saw one post from a ECU fan saying it was cancelled due to MU not scheduling the return game to Greenville that was cancelled due to COVID. I do find it strange that ECU made the announcement of cancelling the Boise series and the MU game; ECU also listed the replacement team (Campbell) for the MU game and nothing about the replacement for the Boise series. It sounds like ECU wanted to get a win with a FCS team home game and planned the deal to cancel the MU road game. I don't think many of the ECU fans are happy with the game being dropped.

"In addition to canceling the Boise State series, ECU has also added an FCS game against Campbell for the 2025 season. The Pirates will now open that year at NC State, host Campbell, and welcome BYU to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Sept. 20. The game at Marshall, scheduled for that season, has been canceled. The Thundering Herd's trip to Greenville for the 2020 season, which was canceled due to COVID, will also not be made up."https://247sports.com/college/east-carolina/longformarticle/michael-schwartz-ecu-basketball-south-carolina-game-postgame-222717534/

This was posted on Facebook as well, by a very connected Marshall supporter.

I am not very well connected, but had heard from someone who is during the ECU trip this year that the current AD was not interested in going back to ECU.  He did not want to reschedule the covid cancelled game - thus agreeing that ECU didn't have to come to Huntington in 2025.  Wouldn't bet the house payment on it  being true but source reliable....

  • Campbell U is in Buies Creek, NC, so that is consistent with ECU policy of playing all non conference games in the state of North Carolina.

Sounds like a mutual deal. Spears must have something in the works.
