  • Replaced by Henry Baker from Maryland. Their CB coach since 2020

Why would he leave Maryland to come here for the same position, unless he was without work at this present time?  Just wondering?

Good question.  Baker grew up in south Jersey and Maryland is his alma mater where he played DB.

The Maryland HC (Locksley) contract runs through 2026 and he has led Maryland to bowls the last 3 consecutive years, winning all three.  The HC is also a Maryland alum and seems to be secure in his job.

Maryland hired former Terps assistant Aazaar Abdul-Rahim, also a cornerbacks specialist, in early December. Abdul-Rahim was introduced as co-defensive coordinator, associate head coach for defense and cornerbacks coach on Jan. 12, 2024.

Until proven otherwise, I'm going to take the optimistic approach and assume this hire was a result of Baker wanting to get out of a bad situation at Maryland rather than the other way around.

  • The turnover in football assistants is one constant in college football. Donnan and Pruett had turnover in their assistants, some moved up and some moved down. Just like in the private workforce, people change jobs for a variety of reasons so I never worry too much about it; even when I am not wearing my aluminum foil hat. LOL.

I will say living in Florida, I am not surprised by a MU coach accepting an offer from a P5 program from Florida. Great weather and no state income tax has attracted a lot of WV residents to move to Florida.

Not to change the subject, but I do find it interesting that Dan hasn't had much turnover in assistants. Even Greg White attracted some great assistants who turned into D1 coaches. Since Dan is not considered a good college coach, I really wonder why his assistants stay with him?

  • I can tell you living in Maryland that Baker coached up some guys that play in the NFL. I thought Maryland's secondary was an actual strength the past couple of seasons.

Deonte Banks was not that highly regarded coming out of high school. He was a 1st round pick for the Giants last year. He also coached Jakorian Bennett who was a 4th round pick for the Raiders last year. Bennett and Banks played a lot as rookies as I believe Banks was a consistent starter for the Giants.

Baker also recruited and coached CB Tarheeb Still from New Jersey. Still was a freshman All-American at Maryland.

Huff and Baker coached at Maryland for a season under Ralph Friedgen.

Maryland hired Abdul-Rahim........a great recruiter in the DMV but in my opinion a lousy on-the-field coach. Abdul-Rahim was at Maryland under DJ Durkin and they were less than impressive and Durkin treated the players horribly.

Baker is a solid coach and a good recruiter that can get us into New Jersey and the DMV has he served two stints at Maryland and Delaware. Like I said, I thought Maryland's secondary was a strength of the defensive unit when he coached there. He coached several guys that are in the NFL and had several guys get voted all Big Ten honors.

Maryland probably had to change the pay scale for some coaches to bring in Abdul-Rahim. Locksley and Abdul-Rahim worked together at Alabama. I would say Baker took a hit on pay as Abdul-Rahim is a a secondary coach. It isn't cheap to live around the Beltway. Being a Maryland alum, it probably rubbed Baker a little. The opening at Marshall probably gave Baker a new start with a guy that he worked with before.

Back in the late 1980's and in until the mid mid 1990's I covered VA; MD; WV; DE and VA and the eastern panhandle of WV in my sales job while I was based out of RVA.  Unbelievable prices for housing; entertainment and lodging in the Beltway area.
